For some people everything is a sensor measuring contest.

I have no reason to mind if the whole back of the phone was to be used for cameras/sensors (top half main cam, bottom half an ultra wide and a Tele).

Then and only then they would be able to collect enough light for night photography (among other things) to not look like absolute sh*t.

I hope this trend continues and phones end up (being) portable cameras.

We're half way that journey (actually usable instead of a gimmick, but pretty bad photos still)...

apple, Samsung, oppo, Motorola, Huawei, sony........every single other company gives us the size info in the same way.
yet i never see you cry about the size of apple sensor size info or other's sensor sizes.
it proves you are biased or troll.

vrvly, 30 Jul 2022Now I wonder who will come with real 1", not ad suppor... moreIt is not ad-supported, it is the common size definition in the image sensor industry. Moreover, it will never be possible to put an image sensor with a 1"- diagonal into a smartphone. I think you don't know how large 1" actually is. The smartphone must become very thick so that a whole 1"- sensor can be irradiated with light through a lens.

vrvly, 30 Jul 2022Now I wonder who will come with real 1", not ad suppor... moreThat sensor would take much space(imagine a real size 1 inch sensor with some additional sensors), so I am not sure this will come anytime soon, and truth is we don't really need that.

The sensor is half an inch in size. Stop woth the freaking lies already.

I can use my own metric too, here: Nokia 808 pureview has still the largest sensor because it uses 5 lenses and is very thick.

TheAlienNextDoor, 30 Jul 2022Shameless liars, is what they are. Not only is the actual s... more??? The actual sensor size is 1 inch in optical format, and the phone indeed uses the largest sensor used on any smartphone, tied with Aquos R7. What did they lie about?

The problem lies in the (confusing) standard that has become common in the entire industry, not in individual smartphone/camera manufacturers that use it.

But there is an explanation for why 1" is not really 1" you can look it up.
Like a 2x4, it is not actually 2x4!
                        It is a name only.
                        A stupid one, granted.

Shameless liars, is what they are. Not only is the actual sensor basically the same size as other phones, far below actual 1 inch, but that fugly round shape on the back is just useless and stupid.

Now I wonder who will come with real 1", not ad supported 1".

This way, smartphone, camera and image sensor manufacturers will be also pressured into using less confusing Type notation instead.

Anonymous, 30 Jul 2022I don't care if others did the same. Two wrongs don... moreSued? That's never going to happen, I don't think you understand what this is all about.

Xiaomi's way of advertising the sensor size 100% correctly follows the standard notation that has been widely used and accepted in the camera/smartphone industry for decades, and it's not misleading in a way that it gives an unfair competitive advantage to them. Calling this main sensor "1-inch" isn't wrong by any means since there's an assumption that sensor size is presented in the optical format.

The problem here, however, is that this standard was made when the video camera tubes were used instead of modern-syle image sensors, therefore is outdated and it no longer makes sense to use it. Those people who lack photographic knowledge might feel confused when they see the misalignment between Imperial "inch" and optical format "inch". Because of this, many websites have recently started to replace "x inch" notation with "Type-x", which means exactly the same but is less confusing because it doesn't use the imperial unit.

If their advertised 1 inch is less than that then they shouldn't call it that way, period. I hope they get sued and lose the case.
