All this and motorola did not bother to use 1G + 6P instead of 7P.
😒

MrAndreas, 11 Aug 2022I've been saying this plus the following other reasons... moreI mostly agree. Curved screens add quite a bit to the cost too. Unfortunately, there are no really fully fledged flagships without curved screens from any of the main Chinese manufacturers. I think choice is the key. Would like to have the option of a flat screen with a flagship camera setup from Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Honor or Motorola but I don't think that option exists (it used to 2-3 years ago but not anymore I think)

With that said, even when we're talking about a Quad Bayer sensor - it has 50MP, all of these pixels are read out, and the output is also 50MP in resolution - there's not much software in it, in fact the only part where additional processing is involved is the array conversion/remosaicing part but even that is performed on the sensor itself. You don't need to perform any extra "software tricks" if you *just* want to get a 50MP RAW image out of it.

Rkm, 11 Aug 2022No mention of 35, 50 and 85mm focal length. Is it even there? They focused on this in the presentation with samples from each of the focal lengths. Guess it's just software based for most of the focal lengths

There are 16 pixels with same colour filter together. Even if software is told to read 4 as 1, then you still have "4 large pixels" with same colour filter side by side.
The 16-1 emulates Bayer CFA hardware, the 50 MP does not.

Repeat in front of mirror 100x:

" Pixels are fixed on the sensor. They do not move to form another CFA configuration as I and other here think they do".

                Dear industry,
Please get a decent LG replacment for the future. True high quality audio is gone, dual screens are gone, hardware innovation is totally gone.
Only megapixels, weight, size and charging speeds are going up.
What will we guys buy for our next phone? Future looks grim.

I like this phone's overall direction but it still lacks in things we value.

Rkm, 11 Aug 2022No mention of 35, 50 and 85mm focal length. Is it even there?I know right? What was that teaser even all about?

Smartphone sensors are rapidly getting larger, it's time for us to move away from (effectively) 12MP sensors like this 200MP "Tetra²pixel” BS and increase the binned resolution to 16-25MP while maintaining the Quad Bayer/Tetracell structure.

Anonymous, 11 Aug 2022People need to stop with the " will bin for low light&... more"Sensor is meant to work at 12.5MP" and "The other option are purely software tricks" imply that the sensor just outputs 12.5MP images and upscales them to 50MP when necessary, which is plain wrong. The pixels are binned in different ways depending on whether you use 12.5MP or 50MP (as well as 200MP but I don't think Motorola will allow you to take photos at this resolution) mode.

A 50MP Quad Bayer RAW is converted to a Bayer 50MP RAW through the on-sensor signal conversion, and even though this will lead to more false colours and wormy details at 100% magnification, it will still produce finer details than a regular 12.5MP image does.

Camera is not gonna switch between 200, 50 and 12.5MP according to environmental light.
Sensor is meant to work at 12.5MP.
The other option are purely software tricks.

talha5007, 11 Aug 2022look at those bright light reflections at both sides, that&... moreI've been saying this plus the following other reasons for years...

                              a) The curve actually reduces the directly visible screen area as the pixels in the curve appear compressed to to the viewer which also distorts what the viewer sees, and this on premium phones with premium screens!

                              b) Considering that curved screens are used on premium phones with premium cameras, a curved screen does not allow proper framing with said cameras!

Curved screens are the dumbest marketing gimick "featurex to ever be introduced. Personally, I would pay extra just to have the option of a proper flat-edged screen!

Anonymous, 11 Aug 2022If 200MP @ F1.6 the image wont be as sharp. So F2.0 is the ... more200MP @ 0.64µm will look weak in pretty much all natural conditions. One thing is the tiny pixels combined with a small aperture trying to capture enough light to not be a noisy mess, smeared into an oil painting by software to compensate, another is the tiny lens system to try and provide anywhere near the sharpness for even 20MP resolution, let alone 200.

I'll take a guess and say only the 12.5MP mode will be worth using 99% of the time, minimum.

I don't mind high MP count sensors and binning, but it has to actually come with a benefit and this just doesn't. 50MP sensors binned to 12.5MP for low light is the better choice, assuming the sensor is large enough.

The 1/1.22" sensor size is perfectly fine, if only it was a 50MP@1.28µm sensor instead, still binning to 12.5MP@2.56µm for low light.

I'm looking forward to when Samsung cuts the 0.64 and 0.7µm pixels based sensors and start focusing on larger ones.

This is why Apple are justifiably laughing all the way to the iBank. This is not the real innovative Moto of pre China involvement. Just silly specs. iPhone 12 will shoot better photos with a 10th the sensor resolution. Moto when you launch something game changing without a hole punch using creative engineering design then we will be talking. Lenovo? What have you done?

Rick Astley Rolled, 11 Aug 2022200mp cam and f/2.0? Why use such a tiny aperture?Diameter of aperture changes with the f and focal length.
                                    Not all f2.0 are equal.
Motorola probably does not want too much out of focus area.
Do not forget Xiaomi 12s Ultra has f1.9.

There is many optical reasons why brand chooses f value used.
There is not lower is always better.

look at those bright light reflections at both sides, that's why curved screens are gimmicky without any real purpose. all manufacturers should stop using curved screens, not only they cost more but are fragile too comparing to flat screen, and of course expensive to repair.
