Apple iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max arrive with pill notch, Always-On Display, and new cameras

07 September 2022
There's a new chipset too, unlike the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.

Since there is really nothing new and exciting about the new models, the website writes lines upon lines about the punch hole. As if this is the invention of the century. Apple completely ignores people's desire for a serious 10x optical zoom for example

Almidani Princess, 07 Sep 2022Dude there hasn't been any real news since iPhone X. I... moreThat's an over exaggeration but you do have a point there.

Apple marketing likes to claim how the cameras have improved, and year after year, I buy into the hype. Ending up being disappointed by the very minor differences from model it replaces.

kiasunkiasi, 08 Sep 2022maybe their engineer thought bigger number is always better?Lol

I like iPhones this year, love the new dynamic island feature. I dislike the pricing in Europe, it is too much.
The new dynamic island makes phone feeling more alive and the notch itself, which is a nice thing.

              So sad, luxury phone...
Looks like it's getting expensive each year and there are no ceiling.

The new pill-shaped hole looks much better than the dated notch but calling it "Dynamic Island" LOL

Trying so hard to take from pixel 6 pro the trophy of ugliest phone.
                        Google needs to counter this.

egor9378, 08 Sep 2022Please tell me why the aperture of the ultra wide-angle cam... moreThe f-number doesn't tell you how large the aperture is. The effective aperture diameter is focal length / f-number. Due to the larger sensor of the ultra wide angle camera, the focal length is higher by approximately 40%. The new f-number is 22% higher , but the effective aperture diameter is focal length / f-number, so the effective aperture diameter is 1.4/1.22 = 1.15 times as large.

There's a lot of misinformation on the internet that Quad Bayer sensors only have a lower color resolution than Bayer sensors, but the same luminance resolution. That's likely not true. If this was the case, then the sharpness of the high resolution modes wouldn't be worse usually. Luminance is related to all visible wavelengths (R, G, B). The sensor doesn't have white pixels. Only demosaicing gives you luminance values, if there are no white pixels. And the demosaicing algorithms seem to be a problem for Quad Bayer high resolution modes, therefore the luminance values are not good.
Apple apparently uses machine learning for demosaicing, so machine learning affects the luminance values.

So they made the notch bigger with this bill ? That added screen space between top is useless and bringing that bill down a bit makes the slimmer notch bigger this way so you we now have more screen cut away from the top

"The main camera on the back has a "quad-pixel" sensor"
Note that Quad Pixel and Quad Bayer are different things. Apple's marketing department is probably wrong. It's probably not a Quad Pixel sensor (where one microlens is above four subpixels, like a dual pixel sensor where one microlens is above two subpixels), it's probably a Quad Bayer sensor (where four microlenses are above four subpixels).
Quad Pixel sensors have omnidirectional autofocus, Quad Bayer sensors don't have omnidirectional autofocus.

In case you wonder why no 8K video. Same reason it lacks 4K@120.

Iphone by default uses frame stacking for video as well.
It needs at least 2x the framerate output. In this case, phone would need to be able of doing 8K@60 at least to output 8K@30. Also 4K@240 for 4K@120.
