Apple iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max arrive with pill notch, Always-On Display, and new cameras

07 September 2022
There's a new chipset too, unlike the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.

Damn, so they did nothing with the telephoto. It was really weak on the ip13 pro. I also hate that they went with 24mm lens on the main. I wish manufacturers would go with 28mm. 27mm on Huawei phones was pretty nice. Why go so wide if you have an ultrawide lens?

AnonD-1033007, 07 Sep 2022I absolutely don't like the way prices are so high for... moreLike a comment below already mentioned, US prices are same but euro is weak now.

    2021 7 september = 1 euro is 1 dollar and 18 cents
    2022 7 september = 1 euro is technically 1 dollar now

that is the reason for the hike in eu, if this doesn't stop before february then samsung will hike the price for their s23 in EU too.

      Apple to Huawei:

      'can I copy your homework?"

"yeah just change it up a bit so it doesn't look obvious you copied

"ok" (Apple puts a pill notch in the center of the screen)

thedeepdivesnap, 07 Sep 2022Well, speaking of the worst sales ever, there is so many wa... more(the following applies to Samsung too in my country)

Most people I know buy their iPhones via the company they work for, because in my country the can do this tax free then.

That would make the 14 around 790 euro instead of 1019 like it is with tax.

It's great that they offer 48 megapixel raw files. So many smartphones don't offer high resolution raw files. Even Samsung doesn't offer high resolution raw files in their expert raw app as far as I know. So if one wants raw files with more than 12 megapixels, you often still have to buy a large camera.
It's also great that they use the 48 megapixel mode of the sensor for 2x zoom and 2x portraits. It's embarrassing that Google completely ignores the high resolution modes of the Pixel 6 Pro sensors.

Apple's presentation and also the website haven't explained the sensor correctly. Analog binning gives you 0% more light. A 12 megapixel mode of a 48 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor delivers 0% more light. That's obvious because the lens doesn't change. The advantage is that the 12 megapixel mode has less read noise than the 48 megapixel mode. This leads to better low light results (than in the 48 megapixel mode) due to less read noise.

SShock, 07 Sep 2022Yeah, it's absolutely absurd. Frigging vanilla model c... morePrices seem unfair but there are 2 things to remember.

US prices exclude tax, EU prices include.

iPhone 13 was 799 dollar and 909 euro at launch in my country.

1 euro was 1.18 US dollar exactly 1 year ago

iPhone 14 launched today at 799 dollar and 1019 euro in my country

At this moment 1 euro is 0.99.8 dollar (aka 1 euro is almost 1 dollar now)

That is the biggest issue, because weaker euro means higher prices and higher prices mean higher tax.

SShock, 07 Sep 2022Yeah, it's absolutely absurd. Frigging vanilla model c... moreWell, speaking of the worst sales ever, there is so many ways here in the EU, so many workarounds to avoid paying in full....One a sample of 100 iPhone buyers, i estimate less than 20 are paying up front.

So-called "Dynamic Island" is such a meme-y way to call a pill shape cutout, but I don't dislike it. I think Apple did a decent job integrating the cutout design into the UI and it does indeed look a lot more intuitive than Android phone manufacturers' "Yeah try not caring about it because we don't want you to see it" approach (Although to be fair, any notch will disappear from your vision after using a phone for a while).

I'm not a huge fan of the wider 24mm equivalent focal length for the main camera, but at the same time, excited about the ProRAW capture with the new 48MP sensor - Apple is the first smartphone company to allow users to shoot stacked & demosaiced full-resolution images with a Quad Bayer sensor and output them in DNG format, in the first-party camera app.

While I wish Apple included an option to turn off noise reduction and sharpening baked into ProRAW, the large resolution would make them less of an issue if you downscale it to 12 or 24MP. The fact that these images have already been demosaiced means details will look consistently colour-artifact-free regardless of which RAW converter you use to edit them. Maybe it's time for that one last company that insists on using regular 12MP sensors to make a switch to Quad Bayer?

                    The price, though.. yikes.

It's actually a really good device overall. The cutout might take some time to get used to, but it's a really solid device.

"The main camera on the back has a "quad-pixel" sensor"
This might be a misleading statement from Apple's marketing department. It's probably a Quad Bayer sensor and not a Quad Pixel sensor. There's a big difference between Quad Pixel and Quad Bayer. Quad Pixel sensors have four subpixels below each microlens (just like dual pixel sensors where two subpixels are below each microlens) whereas Quad Bayer sensors have one subpixel under each microlens. Quad Bayer sensors take sharper high resolution photos than Quad Pixel sensors.

AnonD-546724, 07 Sep 2022We need to talk EU pricing. The top of the line 14 Pro Max ... moreI absolutely don't like the way prices are so high for Europe, honestly it's too much at this point. Regular 14 starting at 1000€? It's literally same as 13 just with few little upgrades, i understood 800€ for 13 at some point but this is just too much.

AnonD-546724, 07 Sep 2022We need to talk EU pricing. The top of the line 14 Pro Max ... moreYeah, it's absolutely absurd. Frigging vanilla model costing 1000€. 800€ I was able to justify in the past. It's high, but reasonable. Now they literally rehashed iPhone 13 into iPhone 14 and charge 1000€ for it. 14 Pro models start at 1300€. Just few hours ago I was talking how iPhones aren't expensive and I actually had a point. And then Apple pulls this one.

Again, I hope this creates one of worst sales in years and shows there is a point when people have enough. This is clearly that point.

Anonymous, 07 Sep 2022I like the 14 Pro but why did they have to make it just big... moreLooked up the numbers:
14 Pro went from 6.06 inch to 6.12 inch
14 Pro Max went from 6.68 inch to 6.69 inch
                              5.85 inch was plenty imo

                                Not any near 1480

And even if it was tax, nearly 400 more bucks for the same device but in the EU ?
Never seen such ridiculous price difference before, And Apple iPhone are far from being the only ones imported
Like I'm paying the Phone 1099 EUR and giving away 380 EUR to god know who ?
