Tim Cook would rather convert Android users to iPhones than adopt RCS

"Buy your mom an iPhone", he said in response to a journalist's question.

Thanks Tim, we don’t want google’s half baked, anti-privacy, useless RCS on iphones
Keep it away from our ecosystem.

SShock, 08 Sep 2022You're exaggerating the whole thing with terrible examples. All examples that apply to me. Phones aren't one size fits all devices. I'm not here to say iPhones are bad; I'm here to say they're not for me. If they work for you, great. But I'm not paying 1000$+ for a device that can't even do all that my current phone can, or even most of it.

A “standard” that most messaging apps don’t use and Google can read your messages(messages go to google servers and are deleted according to their docs).
No thanks, whatsapp is fine for me.
This is a USA problem and maybe both iphone and android users there should start using a better third party app like whatsapp or signal.

Anonymous, 08 Sep 2022Not this comment again, I swear. RCS is literally in a b... moreSupporting RCS will be good for Apple users, but Apple doesn't want to benefit its users. It wants to benefit itself. If you read this article, you will know that not supporting RCS negatively affects Apple users. What if an Apple user couldn't send high-quality photos and videos to his mom's phone? Tim Cook doesn't care about him. He wants that user to spend his money to buy an Apple phone for his mom.

"oh iphone is privacy!" "oh ios is the most secure os!". This sort of blind misinformation pops up constantly over and over again like fake news.

There is no place for such "apple's top priority for security in iphones" myth to be given. That corporation handed over user data to hackers, handed over user data to the government, intentionally left data vulnerable without encryption, broken VPN implementation for 2 years and on and on. Apple Inc. is safeguarding no os. Every time that corporation releases a new software version, it gets hacked by hackers right away and some hacking tool opened the Apple Inc. toy phones on the latest software version in minutes. Journalists and politicians with a toy named iPhone got their personal data intercepted and even killed because of that. The price to pay for gullibly trusting that sloppy brand was hefty.

AnonF-1006353, 08 Sep 2022😂 your answer is comedy gold, it's not like you starte... moreI was comparing iPhone sound being a comparison to JBL GO (not GO2 or GO3), their smallest portable speaker they make and saying iPhone matches that with its tiny speaker. To which you responded by comparing it to freaking JBL Flip 4 and Charge 3 models and saying it's no match and mocking it. Which are like 5x the size of GO models and are literal boomboxes with massive subwoofers on both ends. And now my comment is a "comedy gold"? LOL? Are you serious?

In an alternate reality where I bought a freakin iPhone:
Lemme just change the game resolution cause my phone is getting old and can't handle it at 1080p... OH WAIT I CANT
Lemme just store and listen to my 160GB of FLAC files on my phone with wired headphones and a nice DAC without breaking the bank... OH WAIT I CANT
Lemme just zoom in more than 1.1X on this picture and still have it look good without spending 2500$ on my phone... OH WAIT I CANT

Y'all get the point yet? I'm not giving you 200$ for a 5 year old phone, and I certainly ain't giving you 1000$ for a phone that can't even do what I use my phone for well. Talk to me when I can buy a used iPhone 14+ for 200$ with a headphone jack and multi day battery life. My V60 ain't going nowhere, and that's not gonna change, ever, because no phone can do want this phone can.

I have a foot in both camps since my phone is a Samsung S22+ and my tablet is a new iPad Pro.

Nevertheless it's a complete asshole move to say that everybody using competing devices should just all move to your platform instead of being willing to work out common standards. Tim Apple just nose-dived into the mud in my opinion.

Only Google Messages, apart from other blessed few like Samsung's have RCS because of Google's artificial restriction on letting third-party apps use the RCS API included in Android. If your phone don't have those (and few others I haven't mentioned), then tough luck with RCS.

Also if they can't implement RCS it looks like it's inferior like the text messaging app on a features phone. But one question to Android users also. RCS is available only on Google message app right. OEM apps, or apps like SMS organizer or Truecaller also don't use RCS.

RCS is literally in a bad state currently courtesy of Google's incompetence in making a proper messaging app. You say RCS is a standard, but Google is forcing Apple to use Google's "standard" fork, which is essentially their own version of iMessage. If you want standard, why not GSMA's version? Well, obviously because it cannot stand on its own featurewise. E2EE isn't even part of the original "standard" that you speak of. It's only Google's and carrier's own forks of RCS that has E2EE.

So why should Apple join the suffering of a half-baked "standard", when there's no incentive for them and their users to do so? Maybe ask Google to improve it further before calling Apple out? No one called them out of kicking off Windows Phone in the market, so they shouldn't cry about their own incompetence in making a long lasting messaging app.
