What I see is a generation old technology and hardware that is far behind all competition. I had two Sonys, but I became tired of waiting for a truly complex flagship model at the right time. It never came.
And their design... never more.

As much as I love the Sony Xperia series as a whole, I have to agree with the general gist of this article; I would love to pick one up but definitely not for $1,000 or euros- by that logic I can simply stick with my Sony Xperia XZ1 or my Samsung galaxy A52.

Actually all high end flagships are expensive especially in Europe and there is not a huge gap in price between different brands. Look at other flagships. A Vivo x80pro launched at either €1,200 (e.g. Spain) or €1,300 (Germany) depending on country. The Find x5 pro launched at a similar price (€1,299). Xiaomi decided not to launch rhe Xiaomi 12s ultra. If they did it would likely cost even more, definitely between €1,300-€1,400 which may be the reason they are reluctant to launch it. Basically, the major Chinese brands have similar pricing to Apple and Samsung in Europe. So when compared to those this Sony phone is not expensive relatively speaking. If this is overpriced then they are all overpriced at launch. If you want a top flagship from any Android brand close to launch date then you need to pay these kind of prices. For anyone who wants a cheaper flagship option then they probably need to wait for sales or buy an older Android flagship.

It's impossible to understand why out of all flagship phones on the market, it's always the Sony phones to be called overpriced when they arrive at the same price compared to other high end phones

Sony has always been missing one or two things from their flagship devices. The Xperia 5 mk IV is their best device yet (more ergonomic shape, wireless charger, and all the flagship essentials). The deal breakers are: Availability, Warranty, Price.
The low efficiency and overheating is less a "Sony problem" and more a problem with the last batches of Qualcomm processors. QSD 865+, 888, 888+, and QC 8g1 are affected, and it gets worse as the latter devices trade balance for benchmark-performance. We should see that fixed with the QC 8g1+, QC 8g2 and subsequent releases.
So while I've been tempted before, and am very tempted now, it's hard for me to pull the trigger. I would have to import it, which means higher than MSRP, No Warranty, and other annoying factors. And that won't change with the mk V or mk VI.
I guess I would pull the trigger if they either; offered it in my locale, reduced price significantly (-35%), or made some clever hardware changes/improvements like switching to a more compact 17:9 aspect ratio or something else.

It's hard to talk about price since different countries impose different shipping tax and custom rates. One thing I always notice about Sony smartphone is that every country cost the same regardless of currency. Even if you do the currency conversion to USD or EUR, it stays the same as the price sold in the USA and Europe in the first place.

the price seems right to me with all it has...
did not expected a hike on battery and wireless charging which overshadows my preference on zenfone9...
but of course, if it sells around 800usd, it would be "buy at once"...
