Mark Gurman: iPhones are moving to USB-C measure next year, but it's "just a stopgap"

10 October 2022
The analyst believes that Apple's ultimate goal is to make devices that only use wireless (i.e. inductive) charging.

Charging isn't the only issue, data transfer is too. I don't use my phone's USB-C port for charging, but I do use it occasionally to transfer a bulk of images over for work. I don't always have a data plan to be uploading photos all day, neither do I want to upgrade my storage plan to accommodate all these photos that'll be deleted in a week's time.

I think Apple has a sinister plan as always. They'll get rid of the physical port just so they can sell more cloud storage plans. Which is an absolute slap in the face of the Cinematic mode and the premise of using the iPhone 13/14 Pro as a cinema camera.

If apple has patents they won't allow anyone too use them, but every other tech are OK humbled easy going .

At the time, Apple argued that its royalty payments and risk of being sued again were reasons for a hearing.

They infringed on 5g , 5g modem which snapdragon banned apple using.

[deleted post]Qualcomm filed a lawsuit in 2017 against Apple, alleging that the company's iPhones and other devices infringed on some of its mobile patents. In 2019, the two parties reached a settlement and signed an agreement that allowed Apple to continue using Qualcomm modems in its smartphones

What about wired data transfer? Wireless is not always reliable especially if your locally transferring a lot of information. Even Apple recommends using a USB cable to do iOS backups to computer for example. Also transferring huge files on and off devices is always better wired. There should always be some sort of physical port, even for recovery if the device is bricked.

Apple usually keeps predecessor in offer (as now, also 13 and 14 series are available).
To continue this kind of approach with 2024 September models they need to make 2023 models equipped with type-C.

I hope there will be no wireless only iPhones in a long time because it wastes energy and buying type c cable and charger is much cheaper than those magsafe wireless chargers.

European union should require open standard for wireless charging before we have this terrible thing that every oem has it own standard for (fast)wireless charging.

Metal components in the phone and EM radiation losses amount to about 70% efficiency. Not only is that bad for charging from low power sources, but it means that heating limits the capacity. A 50 Watt wireless charger would lose enough power to cook your phone. Even 15W models use a fan to Cool your phone.

The inductors and regulators used for wired charging are over 95% efficient. That's how you can charge at 50 Watts while running cool.
