Flashback: breaking through the 60Hz barrier

16 October 2022
After the Nokia N-Gage and Xperia Play failed, there wasn't much market for gaming phones. Things changed, however, and now gaming phones are pushing the limits of display tech.

Sort by:

What about the Sony Xperia XZ Premium?
It had a True-4K display, which was 60Hz, but there was a hidden setting letting you increase that to 120Hz. And that's a phone from Early 2017, making it the first on the market. But as usual everyone forgets about Sony.

And to not mention the Sony Xperia 1 mk 3, as the first display with OLED, Near-4K, 21:9, HDR and 120Hz, is a big omission from this list. Not defending Sony, but credit where due.

Fast panels are a godsend. Amazing to see phones evolving and moving on from the 60 Hz BS. Smoothness above everything else, especially ever since fast charging started to be a thing.

As much outrageously demanding in terms of processing GUI it's almost stupid to comput it on a RISK and deliver 120, there are smarter ways to deliver smooth User Experience, Nokia N900 did it by multitasking in back end others do it using rotating AMOLED, some do it by hiring a proper UX expert. Tizen lives.

I'm quite happy with 60hz I had a realme 6 which had 90hz but tbh I couldn't see much if any difference

I miss Razer phones so much...the only gaming phones with 16:9 aspect ratio, solid IP rating (I don't include IQOO), wireless charging, and OIS in the main cam where GCam shined brightly. I'd love for them to come back to the fold.
