Leonidas, 18 Oct 2022Never take ARM performance and efficiency number after A77.... moreWell we used to have more competition in 2016:
                                        - ARM Cortex (A72)
                                        - Samsung Mongoose (M1)
                                        - Nvidia Tegra (Denver2)
                                        - Qualcomm (Kryo-100)
                                        - Apple Twister (A9)

Now in 2022 what we have is this:
                                        - Apple Everest (A16)
                                        - ARM Cortex (A715)

Qualcomm uses off-the-shelf ARM cores, they play with the cache and slight changes, then they slap their name on it and sell it to people. Samsung does the same thing, but they do less customisation, and the same goes for Nvidia (ARM Board PCs) and MediaTek. We were supposed to see Nuvia cores like back in 2019 or so, but have no idea when we will see them, or if they would be the same impressive cores since then, or would they even be relevant by then. You could say the "Cortex-X" lineup is also a customisation, but it comes from the same company (ARM) and is shared by all competitors, so it's a moot point. Whilst all the talk from RISC-V are theoretical and nothing material has been produced, again a moot point.

There's very little competition or incentive to push things further. We're lucky Apple does provide some pressure so that others need to innovate harder in this particular field.
