Corning unveils Gorilla Glass Victus 2 with improved drop resistance

30 November 2022
Phones have gotten larger and heavier over the years, which means that the glass has to be even tougher to survive drops on rough surfaces like concrete and asphalt.

GG5 is the best I've ever used for Scratch & Drop resistance.
I don't use screen protectors, just a case.
No chips or cracks & no visible scratches except for micro/ nano scratches under strong direct lighting with the display turned off, & you're looking quite hard, otherwise completely clear.

Can't they just make a v. slightly denser GG5?

Someone will probably say, "Oh no, it'll add to the weight & the cost".
Well it's probably less than adding a screen protector in both instances.

Victus (1) is the worst I've ever seen for chips & deep scratches.

I thought Victus means 7. What happened to Gorilla Glass 8?

Too much on focus improving a highly flawed material
Glass is by nature fragile & biritle and abled too be smashed it's like we found the weakest most easy material too damage like yea that's perfect for durable we can make it unbreakable

So much wasted research time money and effect in too a glass screens more durable we heading in the wrong direction

We are told Glass is better because it's more premium and better because it costs more too make however plastic is superior we should have just stuck with plastic screens and improved that instead

David, 01 Dec 2022It was done, Vertu phones had Sapphire displays but obvious... moreIt was expensive because of the material and also the process.

As for the laminated screens well majority carries the vote and It actually has more pros than cons except the major harder to repair con which in 2022 is not that hard anymore

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2022The difficulty isn't the main issue. It's more ex... moreYour right about how its expensive but it's actually stronger than glass, that's why expensive rugged smartwatches use it

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2022i've got a phone with gorilla glass 5 for 5 years now ... moreGG5 in my experience was far more scratch resistant than Victus. I'd also prefer having this to drop resistance. I don't think I've ever dropped a phone outside (maybe once onto grass)

Rosso, 01 Dec 2022Expect not. Our understanding of materials and their qua... moreThat's not correct. Every successive generation of GG is more shatter resistant and, as a result, softer than the next because of the increased use of plastic in its construction to achieve the higher shatter resistance.

As long as Samsung and other comapnies will make flip and fold phones with zero inner screen protection instead of GG Victus 2 or better it does not matter.

Anyway any not really dumb person buy a screen protector i mean real 5D or above glass screen protector.
Relly on GG Victus 2 its self is not enough usualy.
Considering the fast which are Murphy laws where thing which should broke or breaks will definitely broke or breaks the way most people refuse to fix it.

And in other words 10-15 years ago phones had nothing of gorrilla glass and they were very sturdy anyway and a screen protector could help a lot and we havent much issues with screens.
Nowdays even on fall flom as low as knee height your phone can break.

I never buy a phone without good quality leather book case which covers screen and whole phone and i never buy a phone without a well made screen protector just in case.
Accident happens and i wouldnt risk even a single one by giving even a slightest chance.

GG is still glass. Glass is glass and glass breaks. It scratches at level 6 with deeper grooves at level 7. (pun-intended)
They should have at least compared it with the previous Victus instead of a regular glass.

Anonymous, 01 Dec 2022Who even wants wireless charging. Give me a metal back insteadI use it every day. I have wireless chargers all over my house. At my desk, next to my bed, on an end table in the living room.

USB-C ports are pretty good but all ports are prone to wear. I've had more USB ports fail than displays breaking
