A chat with Corning: what are the challenges of making tough glass?

03 December 2022
As smartphone design evolves, so must the glass that protects its front (and very often the back too).

kek, 03 Dec 2022From my experience, GG2 & GG3 were the toughest against... moreYeah, my previous phone (Moto G4 Plus) with GG3 had fallen several times and in all of them the screen was left intact, even when it fell face down against the asphalt.

Im not much concerned about cracking my display as I handle my phone with care and use rugged back cover.
Only thing that worries me are the "Scratches"

Same thing they did with Samsung Galaxy S3/S4 line, which was pretty comfortable to use on your hand (the egg pebble design). Then came S5, and after that, the infamous S6.

Anonymous, 03 Dec 2022If someone starts the trend initially, others will follow, ... moreApple's move for lighter phones will be allegedly by using titanium for the Iphone 15 Pro models. If the industry follows that trend, expect prices to soar because titanium is expensive and and mainly produced by Russia.

So which is better? GG or Kunlun glass from Huawei?

I don't care what you do with glass. IT WILL BREAK.
Unless you figure out a way to transfer the energy impact, it will resonate across the surface and will crack/shatter. If you want to guarantee your screen doesn't crack/shatter, treat it as the expensive device that it is.
I've had phones since the beginning of cellular...Dynatac on up. Never broken or scratched a screen.

Almost looks boring now. Same old design getting dragged for years i.e the glass sandwich design

They are designed to be used without protectors.

Yeah, when it comes to breaking, but not scratching.

It still scratches at level 6 with deeper grooves at level 7. You know that.

They not only thin down the glass but also use it on bigger displays, than the size what corning tested them on, so the final durability turns out much lesser than what was claimed by the glass company

The problem is everyone thinks improving Glass making Glass better is a good idea

Glass is naturally fragile and is able too be smashed

Everyone seems too think Glass screens are the best but the problem is it is made of glass that is brittle

Basically we have wasted years of hard work and technology and research because we are told Glass is premium and better when plastic is superior

                            manufacturers are sneaky

Although it may seem you're new smartphones is more durable it's not

                            Smartphones are bigger heavyer
Smartphones have gotten 15% heavier and 10% larger

moved on from plastic, to aluminum and even steel for the phone’s chassis, both of which are heavier than plastic (steel especially)
                            More problems

All of this means the level of force a smartphone hits the floor at is greater and on a bigger surface area

No improvements have made at all
for when you drop you're smartphone there made too break

Corning glass is like most other American products: average quality, sold at a high price, and hyped up as the best in the entire world.

It's no better than Asahi or other brands of tempered glass. It's just more expensive.

From my experience, GG2 & GG3 were the toughest against drops. Yes, they could shatter but it wouldnt kill your screen in one drop.

GG4 was where they started with their "anti-scratch" bullshit and it has gone downhill since then.

I know from my own experience that anything with Gorilla glass 5 or before is super fragile and I doubt that a few generations down the road are any different, but I'm looking forward to victous

Glass is glass and it will break whatever version it is

The biggest challenge has to be finding ways to convince people that the glass is somehow better each time they re-release it🤔
How many versions of the "super tough" glass has Gorilla released till now? Each supposedly stronger then the previous one - at this point phone screens should have toughness of a diamond and shatter-resistance of steel xD
