Only G-Sync Ultimate requires a hardware module inside the monitor, which offers a few extra features like variable overdrive. Most monitors on the market today are FreeSync/G-Sync Compatible.

Freesync is AMD based. Gsync is Nvidia based. Although a monitor can use either sync the hardware is mostly beneficial in their own GPU. Adaptive sync can use both GPU so a monitor won't have issues with either GPU and will help remove tear in regardless of which GPU you got.
