The Bloomberg report also says Apple is planning to approve what each and every single app that can be installed on the OS.

Instead of gatekeeping the Appstore they will be Gatekeeping the OS.l, and they even plan on charging gor installing an app on OS on early basis!!!!

Which is not an improvement at all.

      EU is doing good.

Anonymous, 14 Dec 20221. Safetynet almost killed custom rom + root community enti... moreThat might be what's happening but there are ways to get around it, and Android is still one of the most customizable OSes out there...you can also stick to older phones without those restrictions as long as you take care of it well enough, most people probably dont need or want the newest phone anyways they just want something that works. My dad could care less about phone UI customization and has had the same model Samsung running Android 6 (Marshmallow) for the past 3+ years. The good news is apple has been forced to open up and it will make for a more integrated experience with other sites and app developers. on the same side this might lead to more customization with app launcher downloads and such....the downside however is virus vulnerability does increase.

good, its about time apple were reigned in somewhat, many other companies have had to tow the line for much less, how apple have got away with it for so long is beyond me, but its good to see that finally apple has to bow down and allow other companies to operate, its nothing more then a massive antitrust rabbit hole that apple will not want to go down, as they would lose, this benefits all users on the platform, and apple can still have a healthy say in what they allow and will not

APKs for Apple basically. I already know Apple is gonna strip this down heavily

dbjungle, 14 Dec 2022What is locking down on Android?1. Safetynet almost killed custom rom + root community entirely.
                          2. Access to Android Data folder is getting restricted starting Android 12.
                          3. Ugly material you with limited color palettes choice
                          4. Customisation option that come before Pixel Android 12 is removed.
                          5. Using 3rd party launcher with gesture navigation in Android 11 and 12 will cause bad animation. (Miui straight up disable gesture navigation for 3rd party launcher due to this issue.)
                          6. You can't remove Google search widget and At a glance widget in Pixel Launcher.
                          7. Google not preventing 3rd party OEM from locking their phone bootloader make lot of phone obsolete after their update are finished. Only Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola and Google that still unlock their bootloader.

Android is looking less appealing than ever.

I mean Android manufacturers have been raising prices and pulling bs like crazy, and now Android is gonna lose one of its major selling points over iOS.

Anonymous, 14 Dec 2022While Android is slowly locking down to IOS level of restri... moreAndroid isn't locking down anything its still very open source and is loads more open minded then apple. Tim Cook cant wont even make iMessage compatible with Google Messages, google has been trying to get apple to do that for a while now. Sure Knox might lock certain things down for security but that's Samsung not Android.

Finally Apple is opening their minds to an idea that software from websites and other stores can coexist to strengthen an OS and make it more open. Its about time for Apple to catch on and lower the drawbridge that surrounds its OS. Android definitely wins customization over apple, and would still be my first choice for open source and .apk downloading.

This is a really cool change. If there is some kind of way to run a web browser engine other than Safari and to keep apps alive in the background it would be a total game changer. Even the browser change alone would be quite huge. I would still prefer Android for customization, however this would atleast make iOS usable for me.
