New EU legislation can bring back user-replaceable batteries

20 December 2022
The provisional agreement covers everything from phones, through electric scooters to EV batteries and will require recycling and free collection of old batteries.

Now we are talking. S5 had ip67, replaceable back and battery. But I'm looking forward for their excuse for not being able make such, on flagships.

A rare big W from the EU.

yes! this is a win for the consumers .

mandate standard display connecter for all manufacturer. so that if a display gets damaged user can replace it with any display! then use it like a diy mini pc for kids.
make smartphone cameras, speaker , reusable after phone dies .( like propose a universal camera connector or something) and make additional hardware so it can be used using usb port

When you can replace a depleted battery with a fully charged battery in the time it takes to power off and on your device and remove and replace the back, 'fast charging' would be the last thing on your mind...

Anonymous, 20 Dec 2022Battery is easy to replace. Remove the back, remove few scr... moreNo they aren't. First is the problem of removing your back. If it's make of glass then it can break. Also doing so you void the warranty and your phone won't have any protection (if it was IP53, IP68).
Next is the removal of battery. Many manufactures use a normal tape (like Samsung) so you will have to use alcohol to dissolve it partially. Bending a battery could end horribly.

                  So stop writing stupid comments.

Does it mean when my battery health isn't good anymore and i could just change a new one like brand new? Cool, but what would happen to fast charge tech? I need the fast charging for my use hopefully they'll figure out how to apply fast charging with removable battery, and i bet that would be pretty difficult but not impossible

This is good news, let it happen not just for eu, but all around the world too.

Battery is easy to replace. Remove the back, remove few screws and battery comes out.
Much easier if your phone has SD888, 8g1, tensynos 1, temsynos, 2 , exynos 2100, exynos 2200 and mediatek 9000.
Excess of heat from these SoCs at some point make rear panels lose the glue.

zaryan, 20 Dec 2022next: implement removable batteries for laptops The article talks about "portable devices" which should include laptops.

Woah, this is crazy good news.

A degraded battery is probably the biggest reason why people nowadays have to buy a new phone. My OnePlus 6 is good as new despite being four year old but it's battery is so bad, I don't know what to do. And I've never charged it above 75% or discharged it below 25% to preserve battery life. It still went from 3300 mAh to around 2500.

For people who charge/discharge from 100% to 0% there's going to be a lot worse reduction, probably all the way down to 1800 or something which makes the phone basically unusable without constant recharging.

And there are no official Oneplus service centers in my country.

Batteries must not be just [easily] user replaceable, they must be available for purchase and delivery no matter where you live. That's as important. What's good about an OEM offering replacements if you cannot get your hands on them? And I'm sure most people will be more than willing to pay shipping costs. Hopefully this will be addressed as well.

We demand the following to be mandatory on all phones all over the world:

                                      1. Headphone jack
                                      2. MicroSD slot
                                      3. Notification LED
                                      4. Replaceable battery
                                      5. Warranty to remain intact even if bootloader is unlocked, as long as no damage is caused by user.

We aren't asking for anything new, these used to be part and parcel of any phones but now taken away unlawfully and wrongfully.

Now it is time for Eu to pass a new law for Micro-SD and 3.5mm headphone jack support. :)))

                                        Go EU Go!!! :)))
