20 December 2022
The provisional agreement covers everything from phones, through electric scooters to EV batteries and will require recycling and free collection of old batteries.

Olympus Oms, 20 Dec 2022Now we are talking. S5 had ip67, replaceable back and batte... moreSony Xperia ZR from 2013 was also water-resistant and had removable battery. The only Xperia to have it with an IP rating.

I don't understand this whole water-resistant nonsense. I never swam with my phones. I don't play with them like a rubber ducky in a tub. I live in a climate that's very dry and rarely rains. That's SoCal closer to the Inland Empire which is more desert.

I owned an S7 edge and still own an iPhone 7, SE 2022, Pixel 3, and Flip 3 which have all IP ratings. But you never see me go swimming with them or take showers with them. I only tried it a couple times with the S7 edge and it was no big deal.

I would exchange water-resistance if it meant getting headphone jack, removable battery, and microSD slot back.

PMKLR3m, 20 Dec 2022The part of replaceable smatpjone batteries is a 'Dumb... moreWho are you to decide?? and why not give customers an option if thy want to pick a phone with replaceable battery , then what is the problem? ?

PMKLR3m, 20 Dec 2022The part of replaceable smatpjone batteries is a 'Dumb... moreHere is the reason why you're wrong:- Removable batteries can be removable through the bottom as well, thus not affecting the glass construction or thickness or IP rating in any way.

Closedmindedly, you're thinking of an older design, the one involving back covers, and again, there's no proof that the older design is bad towards thickness or IP ratings. And Samsung Galaxy S5 proves all your points wrong anyways with the older design.
        So, let the inevitable happen.

IpsDisplay, 20 Dec 2022Enlighten me please tell me what is the reason smartphones ... moreThinker phones with more complex construction, water/dust resistance and with higher price

Samsung only removed the choice of removing batteries, just because Apple never offered this option, with All this modern technology, its amazing that mobile batteries never seem to improved at All,but still a lot of people still charge there phones while sleeping, but this just cuts the life out of the batteries and damages them,so hope we do get removable batteries back and stop mobile producers using glass covers on phones that break so easy and use more durable material that does not break easily, plus cut the cost of phones down

zaryan, 20 Dec 2022next: implement removable batteries for laptops That is part of the law as well, perhaps I should have mentioned it explicitly (I was trying to focus on what this means for smartphones).

The part of replaceable smatpjone batteries is a 'Dumb decision'.
I guess EU* has no idea why smartphones no longer have replaceable batteries.
[Thinker phones with more complex construction, water/dust resistance and with higher price.]
                  This will never happen.

Europe is saving the mobile industry! Hurray! More phone owners don't need upgrade every few years now. They can keep their phone for at least 5 years or when it stops updating.

I still have my LG G5 and only got a BlackBerry Bold 9900 about 18 months ago for $5. Brand new and the battery still works like it never degraded compared to the spare I bought from eBay which stops charging at 80%.

I would still use my LG G5 if battery life wasn't so short. What next, EU? Help us get microSD and headphone jack back!

Anonymous, 20 Dec 2022Stop for a moment. Forget all of what you think of this an... moreGood question and I have a couple of questions for you too:
                      1. Your question back to you, Who's voting for this?
                      2. How does it affect us? Why should it matter who's voting?
                      3. In what way is it bad?

Im heavy user imagine last year i bought a new 800$ phone with fast charging and play heavy games plus video recording for 2/3 hours a day then battery health degraded by almost half within a year! Used to get 8 hrs SOT then 4.5hrs..oh man i can't enjoy the phone at the fullest..i wouldn't mind non replacable battery but the companies didn't provide battery replacement services!

The EU do occasionally do something good. Now it would be really great if they made headphone jacks and micro SD support mandatory too

Please do it EU. I hope the same applies to India too.
It was a stupid move by mobile industry. And I still haven't received a half decent explanation.

And I repeat, removable battery isn't necessarily breaking IP68 standards. All depends on engineering.

First usb c and now this? Wtf i love the EU now
Next they should make a law about bringing back the charger as well as the headphone jack and sd card

The problem with phone batteries is they start to wear out in few years, requiring expensive replacement and sending the phone to service center as well, but if the phone battery lasts well for the entire life of a device (about six years or according to model) then I'm okay with non removable batteries

Unfortunately, manufacturers are pushing for crazy charging speeds, causing battery to degrade faster than ever

I don't mind to have a lesser IP rating in favor of a removable battery. Fairphone is one of the few manufacturers that offers a removable battery. With longer software support it's way easier to keep a phone for many more years.

                                    Salute to the EU
