Flashback: the Lightning connector was ahead of its time but is now obsolete

15 January 2023
The first devices with Lightning arrived several years before USB-C hit the scene - modern, sleek, reversible. But now it's almost time to say goodbye.

One thing I do have to give Apple credit for with the lightning connector is that it doesn’t start wiggling nearly as quickly or not at all, with my Galaxy S8, macbook pro(the only usb c ones) and now Dell XPS 15 the port started to be less tight after time, while on my iPhone 11 pro max and ipad air 2(2014) the port is still rock solid as on day one, but that doesn’t nearly outweigh the convenience of all my devices having the same port (although Dells out of spec charger makes things more difficult, can’t even fast charge my ipad pro due to the lack of 9V output from Dells charger -.-)

Anonymous, 15 Jan 2023usb c is thin and prone to bending/breaking. They don'... moreApple port and cables are just as weak then. Actually, apple cables are popular for being weak and breaking after few months. The replacement comes expensive. Any port can break after misuse. It can't be concluded for sure tho, which port is more durable, lightning or USB

Why couldn't Apple update Lightning while it looks the same, just like USB-C? They could've gotten a generational boost per iPhone like USB while still staying the same. It could've gotten USB 3.0 to latest and copy the principles of USB-PD. Sure, they're a two trillion dollar company but spending to keep up with the rivals should be chump change.

They don'... moreNot factually true, the metal USB-C plug head is almost double the thickness / width of the lightning one and the port is much larger. Loads of Lightning plug heads would snap off or split the plastic below it.

potato4k, 16 Jan 2023Stop stalking me and be stupid somewhere else. No phone is ... moreI agree with you. As much as type c is better, only Android flagship get better usb 3.x speed, other Android phone still stuck in usb 2.0 speed. Xiaomi is the most guilty in this case, their Ultra phone still use usb 2.0 speed.

Apple could use lightning with usb 3.x speed in their iPhone, they just don't wanna utilise it for the sake of being greedy. Even the latest indicate that only Pro iPhone will get type c with usb 3.x speed. iPhone 15 and 15 Plus still use usb 2.0 speed.

As for usb 4.0, ironically iPad Pro is the only portable device that I know utilise the mentioned usb 4.0.

No! I work at mobile dev company. We have 20 cables. All lighting cables bend and break, not a single microusb or usbc cable broke. And all swift devs cables at home also bend and break!

                                    "Now" it's obsolete?

"Despite some loud rumbling against USB-C, Apple is actually an early adopter of the connector. However, the USB-C standard was only finalized in 2014, which was too late – Apple wanted off the 30-pin connector as soon as possible."

So Apple's impatience by getting rid of the 30-pin connector ASAP is why we got stuck with USB-C for 10 years? They couldn't wait like 2-3 more years? I really don't miss that 30-pin. It's not reversible. It can scratch up your charging port. It's slow. I did order the dock which used to come with the iPhone 2G. Easier to place my 4S on it.

Having Lightning doesn't bother me anymore thanks to getting this Baseus octopus cables from eBay for $10. I got two for USB-C , one for Lightning, and one for micro-USB to charge old stuff like my DualShock 4 or PS Vita slim. Or I'll charge my Androids and iPhones wirelessly if they have it. I''m still pleased that EU forced Apple to finally go USB-C for their iPhone 15 and beyond.

Codedslam, 15 Jan 2023If So True, Why Do Some Apple Product As Usb C?Those Apple products on USB-C, like ipads, are not Apple's main seller, so it's easier decision to switch to the USB-C standard. Iphone is Apple's main cash cow, so they will want to milk lightning as long as possible, and then move to wireless/MagSafe so people will have to buy more accessories again. The USB-C on iphone is forced by the EU, that's why Apple is not happy about it.
