Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 to bring new hinge design to hide the display crease

16 January 2023
Samsung may use a "droplet" hinge mechanism that it patented back in 2016.

I'm not a fan of foldable phones. I love rigid gorilla glass because it's more durable.

Meanwhile they talk like as they're super wise being empty headed. Samsung could get rid of crease long time ago but it would have cost them ipx8 certification. So all they were doing to figure out the shortcomings.

The above + the thickness of the device when folded, IMO, are the two most prominent reasons that foldables do not gain traction. They seem to be worse than both a phone or a tablet yet at a price of both of them.

Xiaomi (and their fold 1) remains the only to produce a foldable with a working aspect ratio when unfolded. Yet it sucked as a phone, as a tablet it was great though.

Similarly the Mate Xs series were great phones (very thin for foldables), yet sucked as tablets.

Apart from the above, every other foldable manages to suck at both being a phone (waaaay too thick) and a tablet (useless aspect ratio).

Yearly remodels were an Android thing because the only way they could compete was to keep their phones fresh in the mind of consumers.

The Z has moving parts. 1 year is not enough time to test when durability remains the focus. It's a responsibility only Samsung has right now. It's been 2019 since we first saw the tear drop from Moto. As of today in 2023, no mfr has figured out how to make a tear drop hinge fold water resistant. Furthermore all the 2nd gen folds from Oppo, Xiaomi and Honor have a more visible crease. It's still better than the Z, but they have not brought us closer to a creaseless design.

They all sprinted when they should have paced themselves. If Samsung actually figured out how to close the gap and keep water resistance, there won't be any competition until Apple makes a fold.

I have had og Galaxy Fold and now Fold 3 and the crease is not an issue for me at all.

I think oems should focus getting more durable foldable&rollable screens and getting the price down.

It only took the market leader how many years to catch up to what the Chinese OEMs have been doing? About 3+ years? At least Samsung will finally get rid of it.

If they can put an S-Pen slot, I might consider. But I think I'll only go for the rugged smartphones for now on since battery life means the most for me. Tired of charging all my smaller phones daily. I don't want to think about it anymore. Charge it once a week for an hour and I'm ready to go for another week. Add the fact they're usually far cheaper, include headphone jack and expandable storage, and are way more durable than all these $1000-$1800 mainstream phones.
