Spotify had a record 205 million premium subscribers at the end of 2022

31 January 2023
It's the first music streaming service to surpass 200 million. Its monthly active users numbered 489 million in Q4. The company ended the quarter with a loss, however.

So that's why they offered me free 3 months subs by the end of year even though I gave up using spotify for years. I thought it was rather fishy, but it's free, so i don't mind.

I've been using Spotify since 2015, and it's still my preferred music streaming platform to this day. I did try out Tidal and YouTube Music before, but they didn't completely float my boat much. Plus, with more than 8,200 songs Liked in my library, I definitely won't be migrating to another platform anytime soon.

....aaand still no lossless for premium users.

...nor will there ever be unless Spotify starts losing customers, which apparently isn't happening.

                          Major bummer.

As stated below by another user, I can also live without lossless while walking or driving around, but when listening "seriously' on my home stereo, I'd like at least (actual) CD quality.

I don't think that that is too much to expect, especially since they promised to deliver it years ago.

Those big names only have 2 good songs on each album and earn big money from ignorant people. There are thousands of artists (not entertainers, artists) who are perfectly capable of making a good album without weak teacks. Examples? Satyricon, Mayhem, Khold, Origin, Osiah, Bathory, Siddharta, Exocrine, First Fragment, Stillbirth... I know thousands of bands and can't even name one Eminem song, haha.

I sometimes listen to the streaming services to find new music then buy the album in FLAC from HDtracks, Bandcamp, or even 7digital if it's working. Some bands' music fuzzes out so badly that it misses beats. I think an early The Birthday Massacre album was when I ditched MP3 and AAC because it was the third time I had to re-purchase an album because of compression problems.

Yes, I have a headphone jack. It's easy, it sounds good, I use it. It pairs well with a 1 TB microSD card so those 500MB FLAC albums seem tiny.

Can you do a ABX test and prove that you can distinguish lossless from lossy?

AAC/Vorbis at 192kbps, Opus at 160kbps and MP3 at 320kbps is transparent to most of the poeple. This has been thoroughly proven.

Spotify uses AAC at 256kbps for Premium users and it is more than enough even for audiophiles.
