I hope that's 5 V with the return of the variable zoom lens. 5 line used to lack ToF and laser sensors

WhatSAComputer, 03 Feb 2023I don't understand the 21:9 being such a deal breaker,... moreAlso, let's not forget that most phones of today use 20:9 screen panels. Some phones like the LG V60/Velvet/Wing use a 20.5:9 screen. Even Motorola Moto G100 has the same 21:9 screen aspect ratio as current Sony phones. At the end of the day, there's no getting away from the fact that smartphones are getting taller day by day.

AnonD-731363, 03 Feb 2023This is very true. I really wonder why they not withdrawn... moreBecause Sony is making money from their mobile, LG was not.

Anonymous, 03 Feb 2023The problem is that the Xperia 1 IV is super tall (165 mm).... moreHow silly of me to pick one of the few other non 20:9 samsung phone.
I knew the base s23 is 20:9 and assumed they all were.

Anyway a thinkphone is those exact display dimensions, and was recently in the news, so pretend I wrote that.

On the aspect of height, yeah I can see were you are coming from, and it feels like a much more sensible complaint than "oh, 21:9! What an extreme aspect ratio, not like my 20:9 s23" and I can see someone being annoyed by having to fit it in their pocket.

That said a lot of popular devices are 165 mm tall the A13, and A23 from samsung are both 20:9 ~6.6" (thick bezeled, budget devices that are very good sellers)

The Z flip 4 too is 165 mm with a 6,7" 22:9 screen, and weirdly reviewers are not consistently complaining about the tallness of it, even then, there is some bezel on the xperia, the most you'll have to ever stretch to is upto 158 mm, wich I think it's a good stretch in line with/slightly less than the rest of the android industry.

I see your point about how tall it is, and I don't know if it's an optical illusion due to narrowness: like people who have very muscular necks look shorter than people with same height and slender build.

I really wonder why they not withdrawn from mobile market just like LG did knowing they barrely selling and among all available brands their sales are far worse than Doogee, Oukitel or Cubot brand for example.

If you like it or not Sony makes the best phones,

WhatSAComputer, 03 Feb 2023I don't understand the 21:9 being such a deal breaker,... moreAndroid (the Operating System) is very fluid and works on a range of aspect ratios.
I saw an Engineer build a CyberDeck, it used a RPi 4 and Android, the screen was 32:9 which stretched everything.

The real limitation of Aspect Ratio is Apps. Majority of Apps were built with 16:9 and the OS automatically adjusts the App for the target ratio. Most of the time it's fine, but it's never perfectly optimised. Sometimes it crashes. Few of the time it runs, but has a lot of graphical issues.

In terms of Aspect Ratios we have:
                      1.600 (16:10)
                      1.666 (5:3)
                      1.777 (16:9)
                      1.888 (17:9)
                      2.000 (18:9)
                      2.111 (19:9) --Standard Samsung
                      2.222 (20:9)
                      2.333 (21:9)

In my opinion, the best option is actually 17:9. It gives you a full-16:9 display, plus a little extra to have those rounded corners, notifications shade, navigation bar, and notches. And that would go great on a squarcle phone which strikes a balance between form and function.

For maximum function, a flat sharp phone, which has a 16:9 display, and two slim bezels like Sony. That would be a pretty compelling design as well.

For elagence or form, a curved phone is imagined. This would be 21:9, have no bezels, and have notches. Seems like what OEMs are striving for, but it sounds like a nightmare for the users, having anxiety over it's fragility, and difficult usability.

People kept asking me if I was outside facing the wind or near construction areas. Because they can't cancel noise from the voice.
