I think bringing down price and having more up-to-date CPU and main sensor could generate much more profit for Sony. Zenfone 9 is a better buy than Xperia 5iv due to those exact reasons, even though it's also somewhat overpriced, but still cheaper and ticks other boxes.

kevinmcmurtrie, 03 Feb 2023Because Sony devices are incredibly buggy. You're alw... moreRight, then we're talking about update quality, not how many updates or for how many years of updates. Good quality update policy will fix bugs in very few attempts, no need years and years of updates.
Even for other manufacturers, bugs are rarely fixed, instead they just publicize many years of (worthless) updates and ignorant buyers fall for it. You'll find many posts/comments in online forums complaining about bugs, but how many do actually get fixed? Instead of fixing bugs, they push more ads, features that restrict user freedom and slow down phones with each update.

blue, 03 Feb 2023I think Sony is truly desperate trying to find its position... moreThey barely exist thanks to their own Japanese market, where they have a pretty good share of around 10%. Well, outside of Japan, literally no one needs their phones.
And I didn’t quite understand what the division that produces cameras has to do with their smartphone business

Anonymous, 03 Feb 2023Why do people care so much about updates? Can you tell diff... moreBecause we are talking about flagships, not mid range phones.
When you are paying that much money for a smartphone with the current competition, you expect(or demand),getting many years of software OS updates and getting the monthly security patches in time.
Hardware wise, most android flagships these days are the same anyways.
Many android companies when you buy their latest flagship, the first year they treat you properly. But after the first year, they treat you like you phone downgraded and became a mid range or something.
This also sucks for people that want to buy previous year flagships(due to lower cost).

Anonymous, 03 Feb 2023Headphone jack and microSD card is better than any update t... moreNo its not, when we are talking about flagships that cost 1400euros like Sony Xperia flagships.
I would get any day of the week a Google Pixel pro(900euro) without headphone jack but with great software support(and point and shoot great camera)which is 500euros cheaper, and buy the best wireless headphones with the money left.
Headphone jack(and microSD)are nice to have, but they are not a must nowadays. Dont confuse the entry and mid range phones, with flagships.

Anonymous, 03 Feb 20232.5x to 5x will be better, but it's still kind of poin... morewhat you say is very good but, it can be achieved in 2-3 years at best, not in 2023. that's why I kept the range narrower. remember,it was only 3.5x-5.2x last year as the first generation. 2.5x-5x sounds like more reasonable upgrade for today's tech.

I was expecting the next Xperia 1 to actually feature 4 camera modules instead of 3... I have the Xperia 1 IV and I love it. But the jump from 24mm equiv to 85-125mm leaves me with a little desire to have a 50mm too. Usually, Sony Digital Zoom algorithm is quite good up to 2x, but I'm quite sure they could have done better in most scenarios if we had a 50mm in between 24mm and 85-125mm.
Until we see the specs for the Xperia 1 V, I couldn't comment on anything else, but this is what I thought as soon as I saw it has only three cameras.
