Apple made it a trend... moreLol, they didn't even follow anyone by bringing back those flat sides on the Xperia 1 II long before Apple brought them back on the iPhone 12 series. Sony could hardly give a damn about whatever Apple wants to do because, unlike them, Sony could really design beautiful devices with no stupid screen cutouts and really make a lot of sense in every way.
And yes, it DOES matter that Sony came up with it first because it only meant that it was NOT Apple's idea, like you're clearly trying to make it look like.

Txindoki, 11 Feb 2023Triple vertical camera has been there since 2019I am talking about the triple individual circular lenses, this design reminds me of Z fold series.
Most of Sony phone usually have all these 3 lenses in to single long glass camera island.

FatShady, 11 Feb 2023even at their ridiculous prices, they're still losing ... moreSony is not. After 9 months, revenue is bit above compared to previous fiscal year.
Did you know some chinese sub brands bleed money and parent brand has to cover?

Xperia 10/10+ from 2019, there was prototype with that design even before Xperia Z was announced in 2012. But with glass frames.
Design of XZ/XZ1 is from 2009-10 as well.

Apple made it a trend with the iPhone 12, when someone makes a phone with a flat back and sides, they're copying Apple, not Sony
Sony ditched the design but brought it back because it became a trend (because of Apple)

Samsung user, 11 Feb 2023It looks more like triple vertical lenses a la Samsung phon... moreNot even close. Meanwhile, the flat and oval shape of the top and bottom side of the Galaxy S22 and S23 Ultra seriously resembles Sony's Xperia XZ Premium from 2017.

LuxxIfEr, 11 Feb 2023Dear Sony, you use the identical design from the Xperia 1 m... morethey spend more of that r&d on internals...
imagine how they increase battery capacity witj similar body, or even quite smaller, and lighter?
besides, it is part of "branding"...
look at other brands too - even on just camera modules... iphone since 11, pixel since 6, samsung since 21

Anonymous, 11 Feb 2023oh, he or she will be surprised how it has close resemblanc... moreThis! I mean, the modern blocky Xperia family series design, especially, since Xperia 1 II (which predates iPhone 12 series for at least 8 months) is a modernized, bezel-less version of OmniBalance's squarish design from the Xperia Z series (2013-2015), and Sony had the concept of this square design in their sleeve as far from 2006, from the link of my previous reply (predates iPhone 4 too). Even GSMArena acknowledged Sony had this design first before iPhone in Xperia 10 IV review. And knowing Steve Jobs himself was admiring Sony back then and Apple right now is mostly the same, I'm not surprised at all.

LuxxIfEr, 11 Feb 2023Dear Sony, you use the identical design from the Xperia 1 m... moreDesigned in Japan.
No chinese pieces.
Redesigned internals to increase battery since mark 2.
Newer components.
BoM of xperia is above $500 just like Galaxy Ultra and Iphone Pro Max. Many custom components.
Not $360-400 like chinese flagships.
Those ultra high prices of Pro and Pro-i were not just profit margins. Both were much more expensive to make compared to 1ii and 1iii.

LuxxIfEr, 11 Feb 2023Dear Sony, you use the identical design from the Xperia 1 m... morebecause of the brand logo, the rest Spec is the same as $600 Chinese brand... The AnTuTu score is still 800 thousand, considering that other phones have already reached 1 million with 8 Gen 1. Battery life, screen brightness, sound, software support etc like a $600 phone.

Narazumono, 11 Feb 2023Another generic flat back and side iPhone design ripoff W... moreiPhone design ripoff? Sony is by far one of the most differentiating manufacturers in android land, the Xperia design is recognisable out of many, and Sony came with this design pretty much far back to when they released the first initial Xperias. The iPhone doesn't look even similar to the Xperia line of phones.
