But the Galaxy Z Fold6 just might.

Honestly, I'd rather they make the inner display more resistant to scratches than to include an s-pen. I have the pen with my fold 4 but couldn't use it heavily due to a concern that it might break the screen

First, the crease visibility is a result of the hinge design. You're the 1st person I've heard say it is more visible because of the UTG. What is your reference? My reference is 45k members+ on the Reddit forum. That isn't even 1% of total Fold sales, but it's the biggest active fold forum. There are people there that have owned 2-3 generations of the Z and they don't hold your position about the UTG.

There are some that have speculated the plastic is more durable than the glastic, but we don't know. I'm not even sure Samsung knows at this point. The glastic made its first appearance on the Flip so your only point of reference is the Z1. Samsung only sold 500,000 original Z's. It's not a fair comparison. You can't reference other foldables because Samsung sold more Folds in China than all other manufacturers except Huawei.

I'm not completely sold on Samsung's glastic either. I was hoping Google would use LG's foldable panel so we could see how well it holds up. I just don't think you have enough evidence to support your point.

      wow

joe nodden, 21 Feb 20231) None of that information is objective. 2) Let's ... moreOf course, but the UTG makes the crease worse (it cant be as tight or else the glass will break) and when the glass eventually does break from stress, the little shards dig into the screen & damage it. That's why the plastic displays are more durable.

Anonymous, 21 Feb 2023a) that's because samsung foldables sell ~4x as much a... moreexcept for the fact that it doesn't feel like glass. there's a layer of plastic on top of the glass, meaning you cant even feel the actual glass.

            2) Let's say, hypothetically, that it is true. You hear a lot more about Samsung foldables breaking. Have you considered the fact that they hardly have any competition in the foldable space? Have you considered some of their competition includes phones with superior, less mechanically stressful, exterior display designs?

            3) You haven't done any research comparing failure rates among different devices.

I, personally, don't see the benefit of UTG either. I don't entirely understand what it entirely is or what the point of it is. I mean it doesn't appear to be actual glass. GSMArena still calls it plastic in their spec sheets and jerryrigeverything still scratches it easily with his fingernails in his test. But you're making some bold claims here acting like it makes the crease worse and shatters with normal use. I mean from what I've seen all internal display foldables have horrendous creases, but the shattering thing idk anything about. All internal display foldables also seem to inevitably break along the crease eventually.

Even without the S Pen, I just can't see the point of foldable screen phones in general. If I want a large screen in the first place, I buy a Tab S8, not a Z Fold5 or Z Fold4.

                b) reason for UT glass is to eventually get to a point where it feels like actual glass with s pen
                c) glass is glass and glass breaks, so a foldable screen in theory should be more shatter resistant than glass owing to plastic used in construction

Mobilephil, 21 Feb 2023Probably because you don't know what's best? How is a display technology that's not only more expensive to manufacture and brings a giant crease, but also doesn't provide ANY benefit to the user, and is way less durable any good to be putting on these devices? The only reason they do it is so they can get more money when the screen eventually breaks after ~6 months.

Sorry Samsung, I'm gonna wait for another year then...

joe nodden, 21 Feb 2023Do you have an objective comparison proving it's worse? You hear of a lot more durability problems with Samsung foldables than you do with any other foldable. Plus, there's the issue with the glass shattering with normal use, and the giant crease that comes with it. There's absolutely no reason for the UTG to exist. it doesn't even benefit the user.

So, fold 3 didn't have it. Typical Samsung to add something in 1 model, only to remove it in the next.

Ah yes, the "there's no room" excuse
Now where have i heard this before?

Why wont Samsung listen to consumers and get rid of the stupid "ultra thin glass"? not only is it the reason that the crease is still absolutely massive, but it doesn't last any longer than flexible displays that only use plastic. id go as far to say that they last less than those displays.

S23 Ultra looking like the Android smartphone to beat in 2023. I read this report last night to check up on any Z Flip 5 renders and I think Fold 5 was too late in the design process to include an S-Pen, so Samsung went against it. Flip 5 should have a bigger cover display while the Fold 5 will be thinner, wider when closed, and lighter
