Weekly poll: are you ready to buy your first foldable? And which way will it fold?

12 March 2023
Competition in the foldable segment is heating up and several high profile launches are expected before the end of the year.

Sort by:

So 17% is using a flopfoldabl gadget and 4% gave up on it.
(about 80% doesnt use foldable)
About 20% of people that used a foldable (4/17+4), stops using foldable after trying it AND this number can easily rise further when prolonged use is experienced and one wants a normal phone again (logic). Thats huge. Thats the news. People shouting they want to try foldable says nothing.

Foldables will decline and stay a niche within several years.

This is not even taking into account foldables are too expensive for many.

    "Galaxy Z Fold4's display is 183,2 cm².
The Galaxy S23 Ultra's display is 114,7 cm²."

This means fold is nearly 60% larger than ultra. That makes their logic also incorrect.

Narazumono, 13 Mar 2023I don't think anyone outside the US does I think the person is talking about things like Google Pay. Which I have used all over the world.

Anonymous, 13 Mar 2023That's what I love about Motorola's RIZR Rollable... moreI'd rather just get a normal phone at that point. It'll be cheaper, more reliable, less likely to have crease or whatnot. I understand in some minor cases it may be more compact now and again but foldables are more expensive generally. It's mostly worth it when you're getting the fold phones rather than flippable ones due to it adding the much bigger screen. I can't really see what the rizr is doing that would be safer (for the phone getting damaged in your pocket / having a screen protector compatibility) or better than a galaxy flip phone. I'd get it if there was some amazing style to it but I cannot see it. It just doesn't wow me or do anything different enough to look better than previous iterations.

Anonymous, 13 Mar 2023Galaxy S4 mini?? Thats a phone from 2013. That was 10 years... moreYes, galaxy s4 mini. I use it, because i want to use medium size phone, but all other android phones are too large. Maybe i will move to iphone se from year 2016, it is last medium size phone with iOS operating system. Or maybe i will move to galaxy flip or similar, when price will go down.

I do not make bank transactions from phone, i use for paying bill desktop and one time codes fram paper.

I was buying a flip4. gave up due to black screen problems, below average battery life and difficulty opening with one hand. I will reconsider once these issues are solved for good. I
want a large screen only when I need it, not a large device all day in my pocket.

For folks whining about foldables, nobody is forcing you to buy them. But OEMs seems to be forcing folks to buy large slabs. The iPhone 12/13 minis didn't sell well. Apple may never release a mini ever again as the SE 2024 will look like the 14.

Go back to 15 years ago, we had a variety of form factors. Motorola RAZR2, Nokia N95, BlackBerry Bold 9000, T-Mobile G1 and Sidekick 3. Then for the past 5-10 years, we whined how all phones looks the same. Now we're whining about foldables? Which way do you want it? The same ol', same 'ol or something different?

I was against the book-style foldables for years. It never made sense to me. The Z Fold 4 is already too tall. Now I want it thicker when closed when I've never been much a tablet user? Will I even use the inner display that much? But I'm now open to trying it out at least once. See what the fuss is all about. If it's not for me, I'll sell it or trade it in.

What I really want is that Motorola RIZR concept becoming reality. Now that's a phone that's 10 years ahead into the future. That concept made all slabs and foldables look outdated. From the 18 months using the flips, the cover display will always be limited whether it's 3.25" or 1.9". Try typing on that. You might as well buy a Unihertz Jelly 2E. Won't always need to flip it open to respond to texts.

Again, nobody is forcing us to enjoy foldables or other different form factors. Different strokes for different folks. But not everyone enjoys the same exact things like everyone else. So get off Michael Fisher's back on Twitter for enjoying foldables that you may not want. It's his own personal enjoyment from his own money. His personal feelings for foldables doesn't have to match your personal feelings for them.

Hikari Kobushi, 13 Mar 2023I have tried Moto RAZR 2022. My experience with this phone ... moreNever buy phone just for the Nostalgia. Also, dont create big expectation because of nostalgia. Just simply buy a phone from "experienced" manufacturer, so you would not become regret later.

I remember buying my first touchscreen phone from blackberry in 2012. It had price of 350USD similar price with iPhone 4. The reason why i picked that phone, because my last phone before was blackberry gemini and i was not familiar with Android or iPhone. With its popular blackberry brand, i thought they could make similar great touchscreen phone like from Apple or Samsung. I was wrong. I felt like overpaid for the phone, my blackberry torch 9860 phone didnt even have proper app store, bad UI, irresponsive touchscren, even worse it had rubber frame with almost similar quality like a pencil eraser, also bad quality micro usb port (broken/fell off after 2 years).

I learned the hardway to never buy blackberry if its not for the qwerty physical keypad. Buy phone with glass touchscreen only from "experienced" smartphone manufacturer like from Apple or Samsung. Today, foldables phones slowly become a trend. Motorola indeed has that nostalgia factor (a razr phone) but thats all it can give. Samsung on other side has multiple years of creating foldable screen, creating foldable hinge and optimizing a software on smartphone. If i were to choose a foldable phone (after learning from mistakes from the past), i would choose a foldables from Samsung without even thinking twice.

I would love to see Samsung built a Fold without the folding display, as an alternative for the foldables. Just put 2 displays with a minimal bezel between them. Instead of making the bezel black, make it reflect the pixels from the display next to it, like a mirror.
If people accept that horrible hole in the display called selfie camera, a minimal bezel would be nothing for them.
This way the phone would be a lot cheaper, there wouldn't be any hinge problems, you can use gorilla glass, there wouldn't be any gap.
You can still make the Foldable division for those who want one for a high price.

Demon Slayer, 13 Mar 2023Foldables should be banned They're a scam You'r... moreIt's just new technology that is ALWAYS more expensive at first when it comes out.
In a time when we had TV at 21 inch screens then something like 32 inch screen TV cost like a 5 years used car. Even now if you look these 100 plus inch screen TV that they cost like 20k euro or so. But if the size gets to a point to be standard then the price drops in time a lot.

It's not like every brand is making them foldables on every price range. These are all at high cost. Even Techno or what ever the brand is that makes low end phones has foldable that cost 990 or so. The most expensive part is hinge and the flexible screen. If these 2 things drop in price a lot then we see a lot of brands be doing them and cheap too
