Flashback: LG G5 tried to wow the crowd with its Magic Slot, but failed

12 March 2023
The LG G5 was a unique modular phone that featured the first ultra wide camera pointed backwards, yet consumers largely ignored it.

sa11oum, 13 Mar 2023The G5 embodies what was LG's problem in a nutshell - ... moreIt's kinda sad LG no longer exists but it's their own fault.
Their downfall was depending on one phone that is way off from all other brands, like a public test device.
And ofcourse the lack of proper update cycles.

Its not really for coming up with strange things because many thing they tried and introduced as first on the market are getting used years later by many different brands like it's their invention and brag about it.

They we're the first to introduce the double tap to wake up the screen and can remember a different brand really made it a key selling point. Just can't remember which one tho because many brands use it nowadays.

The LG G2 and the LG G3 we're great phones but there was almost zero advertising about them.

Anyway they still make some good other products so who knows maybe they will come back in a few years with killer ideas.
They can contact me to help them out :D.

YUKI93, 13 Mar 2023That might explain Sony's high price tag since they do... moreFrom what I've read, Sony currently outsources their phone manufacturing to Foxconn and displays to LG, that's probably why the camera islands on Sony phones are very similar to HMD Nokia's phones

The article didn't mention perhaps the main thing that did LG in which was the bootloop. While it wasn't as prevalent on the LG G5 as it was on the G3 and, especially, the G4, the bad reputation the company had from the latter two generation spelled doom as LG couldn't shake it until they eventually folded. I did but the LG G4 when it came out but, once I heard about the bootloop issue, I sold it before it developed it (which seemed inevitable) and switched to Samsung never to look back again.

The G5 embodies what was LG's problem in a nutshell - always trying to come up with something strange, new, different. That's usually a good thing but it's only good when the market agrees with your strange, different thing! LG never tried just going with the flow and releasing SAFE devices that would be accepted by most of the market. This is what caused their downfall.

LG G2's back buttons were great and I still miss them to this day.

Long software support are more important than 3,5mm headphone jack these days. People could still use USB C earphone or TWS without headphone jack, but with short software support people couldn't force manufacturer for giving software patch/updates they need.

Also someone who wants both headphone jack+ long software support could also buy Samsung XCover series. Thats even a better phone than sony, because it has 5 seconds zero to 100% battery charging speed (removable battery) and military grade drop resistance, use it together with Galaxy watch it would be perfect combination especially for old people who has health issues or strokes.

stubborn pricing strategy. every time they release a new phone, they always match the price of a Samsung despite LG already lagging as a smartphone brand, only to heavily discount it after a year. I guess, pride, as both are Korean brands.
I have the Nexus 5, great affordable flagship phone only small battery that replaced multiple times and small storage. I can't forget the screen of the G3 from a friend, it is noticeably sharper than my Nexus 5.

RIP blackberry, Nokia, htc, huawei, LG.

I've had G3 and G4, both gone boot loop. I'd good bye LG after that

Maybe the Xperia 10 Mk4 will be much cheaper if they outsource it to someone else, but that's just my guess. They might do it before with previous budget phones like the Xperia L, but I haven't seen a new model since the L4.
