Anonymous, 23 Mar 2023As I explained the sensor size is the same as previously. The sensor of periscope has RYYB filter too, that is why is more light sensitive.
Huawei was already using 1/2" on previous phones, but 64MP omnivision.

The larger pixel grabs more light is old stuff that does not apply to modern BSI sensors.
Leica has 42MP camera that has pixels that take longer to be light saturated compared to cameras of 24 and 12MP.
Security cameras use photodiodes with much higher capacity to absorb light compared to photodiodes of common cameras.

In the end, sensors of same size and same colour filter grab same amount of light if same settings are used.
One cam have larger pixels, but other have more pixels to grab light.

AresinUAE, 23 Mar 2023Ooof, i thought they dont use 'android' anymoreThat's what they want customers to think. Clearly, when you boot the phone there is no 'Powered by Android' text, HarmonyOS is just an android fork.

Ivo., 23 Mar 2023Where is the 10x zoom, Huawei?i assure you huawei zoom will be better than your samsung's trash because of higher quality sensors that will work on any zoom range and any lighting condition unlike samsung where you go between zoom range like 8-9x or take indoor/low light zoom photos will look trashy

Anonymous, 23 Mar 2023As I explained the sensor size is the same as previously.By the way, the P50 Pro's periscope had a sensor area of 31.2mm². As the sensor size is the same (as I explained in my previous post), this sensor has 0.8 micrometer pixels and likely 48.8 megapixels instead of 48.0.

This could be either 1/2" or 1/2.4" (newer sensor sony has sold recently).
Difference in the end can be 0,6mm. Either 7,9 or 7,3mm.

It's strange that the periscope sensor only has 48 megapixels because this periscope camera has the largest effective lens diameter that has ever been used in a smartphone! The larger the effective diameter the sharper can distant objects theoretically be regarding diffraction.

Effective diameters of certain tele objectives:
                          2400mm Hubble Space Telescope
                          67mm Nikon P1000
                          20mm Panasonic Zs80D
                          8.0mm Huawei P60 Pro
                          6.98mm Samsung Galaxy K Zoom
                          6.53mm Huawei Mate 40 Pro+
                          6.24mm Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra
                          6.24mm Tecno X2 Pro
                          5.91mm BBK Oppo X6 Pro
                          5.55mm Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
                          5.43mm Google Pixel 7 Pro
                          5.37mm Xiaomi 12s Ultra
                          4.81mm Huawei P50 Pro
                          4.25mm Huawei P30 Pro
                          3.21mm Apple iPhone 14 Pro
                          2.36mm Apple iPhone 7 Plus

It is groundbreaking (!) to see 8mm in a smartphone camera. This likely means that there will be future periscope cameras with an effective diameter of 8mm and combined with a higher focal length or smaller pixel size, they will be able to let you zoom 44% (!) more (8/5.55) than the S23 Ultra (without worse quality) or 47% more than the Pixel 7 Pro due to diffraction.
So it's strange that Huawei hasn't increased the focal length or reduced the pixel size because such a large diameter could theoretically capture far more detail from distant objects, if there were more pixels per object.
The P60 Pro's periscope will also give you a huge amount of background blur, more than any other smartphone due to the largest effective diameter.

How do I know that the P60 Pro's periscope has 8mm? Huawei's official website states that the periscope captures 178% more light than the P50 Pro, so it captures 2.78 times as much light as the P50 Pro's periscope. Also: (3.5/2.1)² = 2.78 , this means that the sensor size is the same as previously. Therefore, the P60 Pro periscope uses 0.8 micrometer pixels and then one can calculate the diameter.

By the way, the periscope seems to have sensor stabilization in an animation on Huawei's website. I guess that's the reason why they have chosen two prims.
