Nintendo isn't always successful. The GameCube was a failure financially. Anyway, the Switch has been so successful because it's hybrid console. These companies keep missing the point Nintendo demonstrated since 2017. It would be great if Asus released an ROG Switch that came with a dock and detachable controllers. And it would be nice if Valve released a Steam Switch that came with a dock and detachable controllers. Unfortunately, these companies don't get it. The ROG Ally is a promising piece of hardware, though. If the price as rumored is true, it should do much better than the Steam Deck.

The Switch is on track to become the best-selling cons... moreThat is only because the Switch 2 will have that Nintendo logo printed on it, not because it will be a good piece of hardware, the Switch is just a Nvidia shield that came out outdated from the launch so yeah, the Switch 2 will be without a doubt underwhelming in performance and unlikely to beat the ROG Ally in any aspect other than...being able to run Switch 2 games.

Kangal, 30 Apr 2023Nope, nothing out there. Valve doesn't like giving ou... moreGabe Newell said that the most expensive model of the Steam Desk was the most popular model: https://www.gamesradar.com/the-most-expensive-steam-deck-is-the-most-popular-and-its-changing-how-valve-thinks-about-steam-deck-2

"Valve co-founder Gabe Newell revealed that the most expensive version of Steam Deck the company offered, the $649.99 model with 512 GB of NVMe memory and an anti-glare etched glass screen, was by far the most popular in an interview for the latest issue of Edge Magazine."

"That's an example of us being a little surprised by what our customers are telling us," Newell told Edge. "They're basically saying, 'We would like an even more expensive version of this,' in terms of horsepower capabilities or whatever. You know, that's why we always love to get something out there and ship it. Because we learn a lot from that, and it helps frame our thinking for Deck 2."

2 million is a terrible number, by the way. The PS Vita is the biggest Sony's failure of a console, and it sold about 16 million units. I know that the Steam Deck isn't a console, but it's still a failure. With the Asus ROG Ally, any hope for the sales to improve is vanquished. This is good for consumers, though, because Value needs to try very hard if it wants to be competitive.

Valve doesn't like giving out details. The only thing I found is more than 1 Year Old, and it's from Edge Magazine. There's a good probability that with the huge amount of sales (2 Mil) they've had since then that things could have changed. Gabe Newell was very adamant about the USD $400 price. Even if the $650 model was the most popular initially, there's a good chance the Base Model will eventually have a long tail-end and have the bulk of the sales. Same happened with the PS4 vs Pro, or Xbox One vs OneX, or even iPhone 13 vs 13 Pro.

Anonymous, 28 Apr 2023No, it's a game over. Done. The most popular Steam Dec... moreWhile I agree with your comment in it's entirety....
...I'm pretty sure the most popular Valve SteamDeck was the USD $400 Base Model. That offers the most value, since storage can be upgraded by the user cheaply. And I think there's still a market for that at that price.

So I don't think Valve is doomed.
It just might mean little/none sales of their $550 and $650 options. And lots of sales for the ASUS ROG Ally in the $600 configuration and $700 configuration. The majority of those users will be using Steam, so Valve still benefits here.

Best case scenario, Valve comes back at the end of 2025 with a Steam Deck v2 which rivals the performance of the PS5. That would give it a healthy 3-Years on the market, at-parity, with the current-gen consoles, then even longer lifespan as a low-end device going into the next-gen cycle with the PS6 and Xbox VI.

Many people know of DLSS (v1-v3) but they don't know much of XeSS, FSR, or GSR. It's a bit funny that this all started with the PS4 Pro in the mainstream trying to output 2160p graphics from 1440p internal resolution. But it absolutely makes sense to use every tool at your disposal when you're limited in performance; which is clearly the case for handhelds.

That's all 1080p low settings. It performs worse than a PC with a GTX 1060? Quite similar to a 1050 Ti. I mean it should have like 3-4x the performance of a 1050 Ti with the way you describe it.

The ROG Ally needs to sell 50 million units first before Asus can even think of challenging the Switch. In reality, if the ROG Alley can manage to sell 5 million units, I guess it can be called a success. In console world, any console that sells less than 10 million units is a failure, but the ROG Ally isn't a console. Anyway, the Steam Deck is so dead if this is true.
