This runs Windows 11, which means far superior support support, and the hardware is much more powerful. If it's only $51 more expensive, there is no reason to buy the most expensive Steam Deck at all. I doubt that an AMD Z1 Extreme ROG Ally with 512 GB of storage will only cost $699.99, though. It would be great if it was the case.

Anonymous, 28 Apr 2023If this is true, it's a game over for the Steam Deck. Not so fast on that. SteamOS is based on Arch Linux, so Valve will keep using it to spearhead Linux gaming. Also, being a FOSS desktop OS, Valve don't have to worry about licenses like Windows.

Having a 120Hz 1080p screen is great for everything outside of gaming. So doing regular Windows stuff like word processor, it's going to FEEL fluid and have much more usable resolution. There's really no downside.

                For gaming?
Also great. The 120Hz display means it's Variable Refresh, so it's not just locked to 60Hz. You can have it run anywhere from 24Hz-61Hz depending on the game. You won't be wasting energy. The 1080p screen also means much better "in-game text" and legibility (ie HUD). You basically keep the Settings the same, run the game at 700p-900p resolution, and then do AI-Upscaling (DLSS 2/ FSR 2) to 1080p. This will use -10% more battery, but increase fidelity by +30% so it is well worth it.

Based on known metrics, the Aerith chipset in the SteamDeck is slightly superior to the PS4 performance, the Base Z1 chipset is basically on-par with that performance, whilst this new Z1e chipset (extreme) is equal to the Xbox One X. That's a pretty big leap, but it's still one-step behind the Xbox Series S, which means it's still one-step behind the current-gen consoles, so expect there to be issues running upcoming games. Hopefully, we will see a Valve SteamDeck v2 in a couple years, that goes even further beyond, and we get console-level (PS5) performance, to give us at least 5-years of gaming in-line with the current generation home consoles.

Overall, it's an offer too good to be true. But that's what we said about the $400 Valve Steam Deck. So let's remain hopeful yet skeptical.

Only $51 more than Steam Deck 512GB? Bring it on. As much as I love the Steam Deck, there's still no going away from the fact that Windows fares much better in desktop gaming than Linux.
