This is actually sad, any R&D and tech closing or stopping is sad. Yes this is like a redundant chips to do specific task that usual Chipset already has, but then it still improve the image of their phones at some level.

It sad that we cannot see how it will mature further, but yeah it cost a lot and pressure from US adding up hence its hard to maintain.

Qualcomm pretty much caught up with Apple, especially in GPU, with the SD8gen2. Mediatek is doing great strides as well, especially in modem. Then there are other smaller ones like JLQ and Unisoc. And of course, there's Samsung, that are doing everything from camera sensors to SoC.

Other than the M1, Apple is actually getting behind. Then again, they only use their chips for themselves, so they are self contained. The rest of the industry, the majority, are not Apple.

Chip manufacturing is not child's play. The mariailicon NPU they created last year gave them the confidence that they create the whole chip. It's not that easy. It's good to try. Samsung failed too with their hot potato chips

MRSTEK, 12 May 2023Nothing to do with the US, ppl here don't understand B... moreI'm glad someone speak up, thank you. Their higher management were definitely a bunch of jokers, no doubt about that. Oppo R series were mid-range series (R5,R7,R7s, R9, R9s, R11, R11s, R25 series, R17 series), followed by Reno series, eventually the first few Reno series were exceptionally good, especially those using SD 8 series processors, Reno 10x Zoom for instant. But the rest of the Reno series were ultimately joke. Using mid-range processor and trying to sell high end prices. Their Find series were also joke, Find X (the first generation), nothing good in spec, but design were special. Find X2 Pro, one of the best Find series, up to 512GB ROM, pericope camera module, available internationally, Find X3 Pro=Ultimate disappointed model, removed periscope camera module, up to 256GB, but pricing were similar to Find X2 Pro. Find X5 Pro were also another joke, similar design and spec with Find X3 Pro, again, up to 256GB and removed periscope camera module. Finally, the breakthrough model came, Find X6 Pro, up to 512GB, with periscope camera module, but limited to China market only. Their product development team is a bunch of jokers, can't even focus on doing one thing right. Wanna beat Samsung but can't even develop a phone that able to fight them internationally. Well, at least Samsung kept the periscope module across their S Ultra series once they got that camera module. A lot of people still buy Samsung, despite their phone is a b*mb, battery heat up easily and might exploded out of of nowhere (yes go YouTube and find famous tech YouTuber review for this), but at least Samsung product team, they remain focus and committed to upgrade their products. Unlike the joke of Oppo, even thought is same series, but nothing were kept in the development of product. I sense Oppo is going LG's direction. If their product team doesn't listen to what the consumer want, they might close door for business like what LG did. Goodbye Oppo. 👋

I had a Find X5 pretty much since it came out, I've no idea what the "MariSilicon" is doing.
The 1x is pretty good but the zoom (where presumably the magic is supposed to happen) is pitiful. On the whole OPPO's photography is still behind where Huawei were on the P30 Pro, I'm really not that impressed.
I don't think this is a great loss.

Somehow is normal. They invested a lot in these chips just to improve photo capabilities, practically to have a separate camera circuit. They realized that a lot of money were spent but the outcome was not so great as expected. 13 Ultra is on the same level with find x6 pro or better, without having a special chip for photo department.
These billions can be invested in something else.

Farhan101, 12 May 2023Why not sell the division instead of shutting down? In this economy ? It's time to realize that these kind of news will be more and more present; sadly 😕

Andres, 12 May 2023Haha..that lawsuit by Nokia really ended Oppo's business The irony is Oppo and other BBK brands still licence Nokia Audio tech, Oppo Reno seried and Find X series use Ozo Audio.

I think the best thing they can do is to join forces with other OEMs like Huawei and establish a common chip development business together .
