BBK's philosophy is quick money, that's why they focused on mid-range phones for many years. So I'm not surprised that oppo cancelled chip project given the current market situation. The outcome of in-house chipset project is unpredictable but selling phones w/ 778G and mediocre hardware is a guaranteed way to make profit.

Making chips need a lot of capitals, and the returns may not be realized until way later. Samsung is still struggling to this day. Apple started with the A4, and the real fruits of their labor were not fully realized until the M1. Oppo quits way too soon, but that might be a sign that they are not that strong financially to support developing their own chips.

As good as Oppo ’money farming’ as you put it may be, $1.4 billion is still a huge amount that can be put into better use like CSRs that can actually benefit the communities in China.

potato4k, 12 May 2023Probably those are part of the reasons. In another pers... moreNo, that's extremely profitable when you can easily sell something around 400 usd for 10M in a single quarter. That's how they thrived through 2015-2019 without releasing even a single flagship.

And yes, I admit that the entire market is (almost) doomed and OPPO's trying to cut spending desperately.

Edit. Ah I forgot the OG Find X. Then at least they released one flagship!

In another perspective, they're not making enough money (since their sales are mostly mid-rangers and lower margin products) to be pushing chip making.

even with enough funding I highly doubt they'll be able to create a chipset that could rival the current top chipsets.

                            their tech is years behind.

Apple, 12 May 2023One more step to apple monopoly. How so? Apple only makes chips for themselves, and their marketshare is actually not the majority.

Wait, why shut it down? I'm guessing Oppo just realized that doing a chip is not that easy and will take more money than what they currently have.

[deleted post]That's your opinion, not mine.

I do criticize US for banning Huawei from using TSMC and Huawei really has many cutting-edge technologies. But for OPPO, just because OPPO's greedy(or BBK's greedy) and want to farm some easy money so they cancelled the entire project.

Can you see the difference between them?
