Future Google Tensor chips might be designed entirely in-house and not depend on Samsung

The tech giant is apparently working on partnering with TSMC instead.

MRSTEK, 09 Jul 2023No, it seems that you've been tricked by Intel's ... moreAgain you keep repeating things completely irrelevant to the problem. It doesn't matter that Intel 14nm isn't exactly 14nm or 10nm isn't exactly 10nm. Intel 10nm is supposed to be more advanced than Intel 14nm. That's all that matters.

They went BACKWARDS going from 10nm to 14nm because their 10nm process was so terrible. Poor yields, poor efficiency, poor performance.

It can happen to anyone. Just because TSMC is the leader today doesn't mean they will be even a few years from now.

Anonymous, 09 Jul 2023hopefully next year with 8 Gen 4 full-custom designed nuvia... moreFrom the rumours, they will be used in the next MacBook Pro competitor that runs Windows 11S. It will probably come to tablets as well. However, there's no mention of those cores coming to smartphones. Maybe in the future, they might replace the X1-type cores with that instead, but I really am not expecting a real-world improvement for phones: it will mostly be theoretical gains (think QSD 870 vs QSD 888).

I spent years avoiding the Exynos on Samsung phones just for Google to adopt them for the pIxel. Sheesh.

Samoderzhets , 09 Jul 2023Google should use some customized Qualcomm. They may have to use the latest Snapdragon.

Didn't Apple pre-order all 3nm dab chips from TMSC even before TMSC started?

Stoon, 09 Jul 2023why wasting money and effort like that ??? Google could use... morethey could've used snapdragon 8 gen 1 since pixel 6 series..

We all know Google isn't Asian. And we all know components are made and produced in Asia. So Google tensor will never be in house American made.!

To be honest, I miss having variety and competition in the chipset market. At one point we had Stock ARM Cortex, Qualcomm Kryo, Samsung Mongoose, Nvidia Denver, and obviously Apple Silicon. We basically have Apple's custom cores only for iOS devices. For everything else is Android and Stock Cortex (or lightly altered), yet it's the innovation that has slowed here, and there is almost no impact that Google Pixel devices make to the market.

So I'm not very enthused about this news. The only thing that would make it interesting, is if the newer +3nm-Samsung node is competitive against the recent 4nm-TSMC lithography. Couple that with a new Custom Core, which actually targets the low-end of the power spectrum. Something similar to Apple's Small Cores (Icestorm/Blizzard/Sawtooth) which uses less power than a Cortex-A53 but runs faster than a Cortex-A73. That's what Android needs to catch-up to iPhone in terms of latency and efficiency.
