Leak: the Google Pixel 8 will be more expensive than its predecessor

10 July 2023
The Pixel 7 and Pixel 6 before it both launched at $600. On the plus side, the Pixel 8 will have more upgrades than we knew about.

I like that the Pixel 8 Pro will have that infrared thermometer. It's similar to a calculator app or flashlight toggle. You won't use them all the time but it's always there when you need them. I expect Apple and Samsung to copy it for their future flagships.

Would've been a lot more okay with this change if they had increased the base storage to 256gb, doesn't seem to be the case though

I'm glad to see the size of the pixel 8. Nice to have that option and I think it's going to be really nice. Loving the eco system on the three and five

Anders, 10 Jul 2023Google - No one's buying our phones, we're not ev... moreThere's an argument to be made that Apple (and perhaps Samsung in certain markets) products are Veblen goods, for which this would actually work. But Google's Pixel sales in the US (and others can say if it's the same elsewhere) are largely due to being cheaper than Apple and Samsung across price points, so they wouldn't raise prices, unless they think their competitors will do the same.

Personally, I prefer a good side-mounted power button fingerprint sensor combo, but the world rejected it when Sony did it.

I had been waiting for a small Pixel at the current $600 price, but a bump to $700 will ensure I stay on the A series. There were rumors of killing the A line, but I don't expect that to happen if they increase the price of the main line.

Maybe I'm biased, but I still think the regular Pixel 3 is GOAT Pixel. It looks like a Galaxy S8 or smaller version of the Pixel 2 XL but with a better chip, nicer display, and wireless charging.

I still use mine almost daily after 4 years to upload my favorite movies and TV shows onto Google Photos using the "storage saver" option. It's unlimited uploads. And the internal audio is stellar with my Sony WH-1000XM4. I use it to watch shows like Andor and House of the Dragon and the sound is movie theater-like. I still use my 3 to play Dreamcast games. PS2 and GameCube is reserved for my Flip3.

After the Pixel 5a 5G, we never got unlimited storage using the storage saver. Then Mali GPU isn't the best for retro gaming emulation. I really haven't liked Pixels since the OG/2/3/4a/5 eras. When all five were under 146 mm in height. I didn't want the Pixel 4 due to getting rid of the fingerprint unlock. The most pocketable now is actually the Pixel Fold if you can tolerate the 283g weight.

I'd rather add a little bit more and wait for Samsung S24 series. One UI is cool and miles better than others. My midrange A52 still runs fine. Flagships simply can't be bad.

Tech is an exception to the normal supply+demand laws, where we expect prices to drop over time for the same product, regardless of inflation. So if Google thinks that their phones can now command a higher price, they need to be offering us something new, and frankly we haven't seen anything like that in the leaks yet.
