Apple ready to pull iMessage and FaceTime from the UK if new privacy law gets passed

WhatsApp and Signal are also against opening a backdoor to end-to-end encryption.

The fact that governments want a backdoor in secure connections is bizarre. It's like they don't understand that if you put something compromising in place intentionally, it's not secure for ANYONE anymore.

Never forget that all protesters globally, whose privacy and security was compromised, were victims due to being Apple users. From HK to all over the world. Apart from the millions of security breathes on iCloud.
Apple is no better than android as a platform. If anything, it's much worse.

Some of these western governments are becoming totalitarian regiemes (more like Russia/China) that want to "Rule" the people instead of governing as they should. In light of what has happen over the past few years it seems that anything the government does these days may have some sort of neferous intentions that will transpire 1-2 years down the road. There needs to be a peoples champion(s) which could be in form of large global companies or billionnaires to push back. However, companies chasing profits were the ones that first created backdoors into their products to collect data without us knowing and sell it for a profit. Now the governments have learned of these backdoors and want take advantage of it. The question is who have control over our lives...the governments or the corporations ? or will it be both? Personally I want neither! Where does that leave us?

Darth Caesium, 21 Jul 2023The worst part is that the UK already has ways of forcing c... moreThe BBC article in part states
                        "Apple says:

It would not make changes to security features specifically for one country that would weaken a product for all users.
Some changes would require issuing a software update so could not be made secretly
The proposals "constitute a serious and direct threat to data security and information privacy" that would affect people outside the UK"

I do hope Apple holds out and others follow
I have to declare a bias, I have Invested one red cent into any Apple product, I don't expect that to ever change

Agree, agree, agree adding that we have history of covert surveillance there have been many "authorised target" who are not criminals but different political views even membership of a trade union, victims of crime etc.

The worst so far unless a unimaginable scenario a arises is undercover police officer, who fathered children with women, yes some already married themselves

It doesn't matter no-one has been dismissed, arrested, so no prosecution. No accountability.

Why is this an abuse of power, no warrant.

If you believe that surveillance is needed, you apply to a judge, on that basis yes or no.

Suppose the warrant is flawed, illegal, evidence gathered is fruit of the poisonous tree it can't be used.

Now Data Protection Law means collected data can be shared with Agencies agreed with at the outset

If the collection agency authorised is allowed to share it with another agency, you now get a piggy back work around, no fruit of the poisonous tree, even a warrant obtained, based on a message that you may not have sent and you happen to share the same name.

That agency the UK shares this data with need not be from the UK, Extraordinary Rendition anyone

Target the people who you want to surveil, The UK has details of the target.

The argument that you don't need to worry if you've don nothing wrong is a concept so full of holes is a point anyone can disassemble.

If the UK wants a back door what messaging system will they themselve use?

If the guards are not held to account then then should not seek more shackles to guard.

Just use a post pigeon or whaf you call em

The UK is doing all it can to progressively become a dystopian survelliance state. Now you see the real reason behind Brexit.

Dometalican, 21 Jul 2023Yeah, I don't like this. You want to catch criminals? ... moreThey already can. In the UK, if they take your phone because they suspect something, they will ask for you to unlock it. If you don't, then you will go to jail. The law even says that if somebody claims to have forgotten their password, even if it's true, they will go to jail because it is "obstructing justice".

I hate to say it but WhatsApp has has become the most safest end-to-end encryption messaging app
