Weekly poll: Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5 pre-orders have started, who is getting one?

30 July 2023
The Galaxy Z foldables are the best they have ever been, but the competition got so much tougher over the last year. Are they still the best pick?

People who type like english is their 7th language saying to "just get moto". Alright, enjoy your 6 months of security updates. What about honor? Yeah, enjoy getting a maybe .1 android update, maybe, if the lads at Shenzhixin China remember the phone is still in their product lineup.

I'll enjoy my 3+ years of updates. Enjoy your abandonware phones.

blue, 30 Jul 2023I get it, you're just another hater. Bye.I don't hate everything that Samsung does. I think they're much better and much more innovative than LG when it comes to display tech. Samsung's a mixed bag when it comes to camera sensors, but they're still really good. Hell, I really liked their S10 and S20 series for just going all out with the specs.

I'm only not a fan of them for several reasons:
•Recently, they're not really innovating. The Z Fold 5 having only a few minor changes is definitely proof of that.
•I dislike the overboosted contrast that Samsung loves to do with their photos.
•OneUI is laggy, unoptimised, and just doesn't fit the bill for what I want based on looks and aesthetics.
•Their low-end phones have way too little RAM and have awfully slow chipsets. A lot of Chinese phones fare better at the £100-£250 price point, having much better specs all around. I wouldn't have cared or even noticed too much considering that I don't use a low-end device, but it's a basically predatory and scummy move from Samsung that erodes my trust in them.

I'm in! I have yet pre-ordered. Im a fold user since Fold2. I have tried a couple of times something smaller because I hate big phones. Now for a week Im using s23 because i have sold mine Fold 4 but I miss him already. And for me the Fold is more comfortable and one had usable than Sxx Ultra or every other above 6.6" flagship. And this narrow form factor make the difference for me. The one and only one hand flagship. And the IP x8 is must have to me.

Almost exactly the same phone spec wise as last year, still 1800 bucks, still narrow outer display. Samsung are abusing their position.

So for now, you might be right. The screens should ideally be dialled down to 1Hz when not being used after a couple of seconds of inactivity, except for games and video playback. I guess Honor has some work to do with their software.

The one other factor that could help Honor is that the inner screen of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 now has a maximum brightness of 1750nits, compared to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4's 1200nits. This is all while they still use an E4 AMOLED panel, so the display is less efficient. Still, anything could happen. After reading your comment, I'm now unsure if Samsung or Honor would have the better battery life, and if it's Samsung, then by how much better. There's a lot of factors at play here.

Darth Caesium, 30 Jul 2023My point is, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has so many points... moreIf you look at the battery endurance numbers between the Honor Magic Vs and the Fold 4 you'll see that the Fold 4 actually gets around 15% better battery life.

Magic Vs gets a 85h endurance rating with 11:33h on web browsing and 14:20h on video playback
The Fold 4 gets a 101h endurance rating with 14:26h on web browsing and 15:28h on video playback

The Magic V2 and the Fold 5 are also running the same processor SD8Gen2 and haven't changed their specs much compared to the Magic Vs and Fold 4. I'm not expecting the battery results to be any different either. I'm expecting the Fold 5 to be the same 15% better battery compared to the Magic V2.

I almost ordered the z fold. Then I decided to look again for more detailed spec difference between 4 and 5. And guess what I saw the magic v2 and now I am all about the Honor magic v2

blue, 30 Jul 2023Wow, you managed to read spec sheet. Cool. And now back to ... moreMy point is, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has so many points that deduct from its battery life that there is no way the Honor Magic V2 won't have better battery life. Saying "back to reality" adds nothing to your argument. Samsung may end up having better software, which could help with the battery life, but the hardware is so inferior from an efficiency standpoint that better software cannot overcome it. I'm not a blind hater of Samsung, and I understand that you get really annoyed by a lot of the people here who blindly hate on them without congratulating the company's good sides, but by failing to even provide a counterpoint, you're no better than the "Samsung bad" crowd.

blue, 30 Jul 2023So what, Samsung still sells better than Honor. Nobody is g... moreYou are right in that the durability has not been proven yet. I forgot that it hasn't been tested, but titanium is almost definitely going to be more durable, even if it's part of an alloy.

Bigger battery may not always make a phone have better battery life, but Honor has a lot going for it. Apart from a bigger battery capacity, both the outer and inner screens have LTPO, while Samsung only has LTPO for the inner screen. Even then, Samsung uses LTPO1 for that, and both AMOLED panels are E4. Honor uses LTPO3 and E6 AMOLED, so they have a good boost in efficiency. Despite the lower efficiency, Samsung also drives the display at a higher brightness, with the outer display's maximum brightness at 1600 nits and the inner one at 1750 nits. This further lowers battery life. Also, Samsung uses an overclocked variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, while there is no overclock on the Honor Magic V2's one. I very much doubt that the Honor Magic V2 is going to have lower battery life than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. Hell, I'd be surprised if the two were even close.

Aspect ratio may be subjective, but everyone I've seen that has a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 or a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 hates the outer screen. It may be 6.2", but the ridiculous height compared to the width makes it completely unuseable, especially when using the phone one-handed. It's literally less useable than larger displays with regular aspect ratios that are very wide. I can perfectly type this with no issues on my 6.71" Google Pixel 7 Pro, which has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, a 162.9mm height and a 76.6mm width. I'm not against something taller like 20:9 or even 21:9, but 23.1:9 is just way too tall to be useable.

I like the flip form factor, but I want it to match the battery life and cameras of S23. Until then, it will be a pass from my side.

I was about to pre-order the Z Flip5 until I found out it doesn't have DeX support despite all the rumours. Motorola's RAZR 2022/2023 is still my favourite pick.

My current phone is a Samsung ...I'm definitely not getting another one XD. I'm sure even with this fold there are software restrictions based on region. (goodlock and the like). How Samsung manages to get away with this scam is amazing. Looks interesting though

blue, 30 Jul 2023So what, Samsung still sells better than Honor. Nobody is g... moreI've seen people with the Z Fold 3 and Z Fold 4, which both have the same outer and inner screens, and no one likes their outer screen at all. Everyone I've spoken to, as well as YouTubers like Linus Tech Tips that daily drive these devices, hate the outer screen's height. Simply put, it makes the device unwieldy to use, especially one handed, even for texting, and it's worse to use than much larger screens that have regular aspect ratios, like the 6.71" 19.5:9 Google Pixel 7 Pro that I'm using to type this.

You're right about the durability claim, I forgot that this hasn't been proven yet.

The battery life should be better, considering the much bigger battery. Starting with the SoCs, they're the same, but Samsung has an overclocked variant, which gives some hit to battery life. Both the outer and inner screens of the Honor Magic V2 have LTPO, while the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 only uses it for the inner screen. Samsung also uses an older version of LTPO and an older version of AMOLED, so again, the Honor Magic V2 has better efficiency. The fact that Samsung's driving 1750 nits from the outer display using a less efficient AMOLED panel is also not great for the battery, so even though the Honor Magic V2 hasn't released yet, there is a very high chance that it will have much better battery life than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, and if not, it should still beat it by a good margin. Honor has literally every single advantage here, so not sure how Samsung could fare better.

As for Samsung still sells more, it is true, but foldable phones are still a niche segment that almost only the tech enthusiasts (a.k.a nerds to most people) will buy. It does mean that the Honor Magic V2 will have a much better time than most other non-mainstream brands have with phones, and the fact that Honor is selling these phones in the West (not sure about the USA though, I'll have to check) means that it has a good chance at being the third most-sold foldable phone after the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Google Pixel Fold. It has unique features, and thins the gap between flagship bar phones and flagship foldables. Also, while Honor doesn't price it like they do in China, they will still price it at most at the same price as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, so it's going to be a very competitive phone.
