30 July 2023
The Galaxy Z foldables are the best they have ever been, but the competition got so much tougher over the last year. Are they still the best pick?

Darth Caesium, 30 Jul 2023•Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 —The Honor Magic V2 beats it in al... moreSo what, Samsung still sells better than Honor. Nobody is going to pay the price Honor asks for its phone unless it is really better.
By the way, most of your "pluses" for Honor are pure speculation, no real facts. Durability of the hinge has to be proven yet, display aspect ratio is personal choice, bigger battery does no neccessarily make better battery life (see Motorola crapzr 40), etc.
So... in fact there is no real benefit.

Anonymous, 30 Jul 2023The only bad thing about Razr 40 is battery life it's ... moreNo, it's not. Much worse cameras, poor performance (less than half of Flip 4), tragic GPU, useless front display. And, of course, despite bigger battery truly poor battery life.
The thing is not worth the money at all.

blue, 30 Jul 2023Razr 40 is tragic. It's not worth the money. This coment of your is tragic.
If its so bad feel free to tell us why becaus 500 euros difference is big.
Please educate us what better have samsung compared to said razr that is worth to pay 500 more bucks.
        We all listening.

•Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 —The Honor Magic V2 beats it in almost every possible aspect:
✖️Both of the Honor Magic V2's screens can utilise a stylus.
✖️The outer screen of the Honor Magic V2 is less tall, and has
a perfectly natural aspect ratio, while the inner screen is better
to use due to being bigger and wider. The Samsung Galaxy Z
Fold 5's outer screen's 23.1:9 aspect ratio is comically tall and
          completely impractical to use.
✖️Both of the Honor Magic V2's screens have 400+ ppi, which
is a good pixel density for most people (not for me though, as
my extreme shortsightedness means that anything less than
          500ppi has noticeable pixel gaps).
✖️All of the cameras of the Honor Magic V2 are much better,
though the short reach of the telephoto (2.5× zoom), combined
with its inadequate 20MP resolution leaves a bit to be desired.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5's telephoto has a better reach
(3× zoom), but it has a smaller sensor with a smaller 10MP
resolution, and the difference in reach is small. Neither
          telephotos are great though, anyway.
✖️The Honor Magic V2 is a lot thinner, being 4.7mm when
unfolded and 9.9mm when folded. I think this thickness is the
perfect amount, and we don't need to go below it.
✖️The overall weight and the weight distribution of the Honor
Magic V2 is amazing, thanks to the use of titanium alloy in both
          the frame and the hinge.
✖️The SoC between the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the
Honor Magic V2 is the same, so nothing different there, but the
16GB of RAM rather than the maximum of 12GB on the Z Fold
5 is useful for gaming and for photography, where it helps the
          image output and post-processing.
✖️The Honor Magic V2's hinge is much better, as well as more
          durable.
✖️The Honor Magic V2 has much less of a display crease.
✖️The Honor Magic V2 has a much bigger 5000mAh battery
versus the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5's 4400mAh.
✓The only point apart from better foldable-specific software
against the Honor Magic V2 is the lack of an IPX8 rating, or any
rating at all, but the hinge does have some basic splash-
resistance due to some kind of coating. It's not all bad, but it
does feel annoying that Honor didn't provide that, and we also
don't know how good the coating is due to the lack of a formal
IP rating. Still, apart from Samsung, only the Google Pixel Fold
has it, so it seems like an IP rating for foldables is only
          becoming common this year.

•Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 — This one is less clear, and for flip-style foldable enthusiasts (not me, but I understand the sentiment), there are more points to consider:
✖️The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has a larger outer screen, which
has a 144Hz refresh rate rather than the 60Hz of the Samsung
Galaxy Z Flip 5. It is also more seamless, has a 400+ppi rather
than Samsung's 300-ish ppi, is in a more regular shape, and
          also has more functionality.
✓The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has an IPX8 rating, while the
Motorola Razr 40 Ultra does not.
✖️The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has a larger battery, at 4400mAh
vs the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5's paltry 3700mAh.
✓/✖️The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a much more efficient
SoC, so the overall battery life is probably not that behind from
          the Motorola.
✓The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has painfully worse cameras
than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, and the bad post-
processing of Motorola phones only makes this even worse.
✓The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra's inner screen is taller, making
for a less useable inner screen.

Overall, if you want to get a foldable, get an Honor Magic V2, but if you want a flip phone, then Samsung probably has you covered. The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is great in aesthetics, and the curved back is nice for a comfortable grip, but that alone does not translate to a better experience. Cameras are worse than even the Samsung Galaxy A14, which runs for less than £200/$200, and the screen is just too tall to be useful.

Honor Magic V2 still my choice. Imagine if they made a flip with 5k battery too

Im still wishing for the Z50 Ultra but this is interesting too. Difference being, this one may be easier to get cuz its Samsung. So i will go for a credit

i think flip and fold this year are good...
but i am more interested on razer+ (or even the razr 2022 due to some moto design present on it, and it has same soc anyway)... n2 flip as well...
for folds, 2 form factors - the find n, n2, which are also similar to pixel fold...
and for the larger foldables, magic vs and vivo x fold 2 got me more interested...

Personally, I'm going to give the sticky ones another year, to see if they end up convincing and Samsung itself said that they still haven't found the dust protection problem! yes I want to try one* but not for me right now

I'm not sure foldable phones are for me. Maybe in a few years when it will be the standard and I won't have to worry about durability, ruggedness, crease.
Also no 3.5mm jack and no SD card slot , at least on the Fold, it's definitely a BIG NO.

I woted NO on both devices for several reasons.
First no accesories in box compared to competition which gives, chargers, cases, screen protectors, earplugs or earphones and way better specs and pricing.

Another major problem and dealbreaker is screen it self. Its durability is way worse than 100eur budget phones no matter the brand. At least they cant be scratched by nail like foldables and flipables.

Another problem is phones this big have much smaller batteries and much worse endurance rating and charging takes eons.

Then there is an obvious price hike. my Moto edge 40 pro costed me at my carrier 789 euros where i am paying 37 my monthly phone bill unlimited text, calls and a 40GB data plus 16 a mon th for next 2 years for said Motorola edge 40 pro which for half price does a lot better job and way more tricks than most other samsung phones. It came with case and with a 125W charger in box topping my flat battery in less than 20 minutes.
Well yes my Moto aint foldable but as long as clasical bar phones will preform better and will do better job for less price and will come with way more durability, way more dust and water resitance there is no need for phones like foldables.
Unless Samsung, Dragon Tail, Corning etc. invent and developes screen that can both bend, flexes but never breaks and s as durable as screen on Vertu phones which uses real shapphire screen for a mohs 9 and above picks scratching whole hype around folables is just hype and a market which will grows only for pebbles. In other words people who want to try and see what next. And honestly the said what next will be classical bar phone or slab. People will buy foldables just as an experiment. Maybe some of them will try again but like 9/10 people who tried foldable phone revert back to what they had always and before.

Once again its Dust resistant not a dust proof.
Like its Water resistant not a waterproof.
And as long as no company going to include water and dust damage into the warranty of a device whole IPXX rating is nothing but an useless costly and expensive gimmick where any dust and water proof case bought from site like Alliexpress or wish for 2 euros does a lot better job than few rubbers and seals.

Lastly its a phone not a submarine.
If they i mean Samsung or any other chinese or nonchinese company would like to impress me and anyone else they should make a completely Dust and Water proof device just like submarine. Which can stay idifinetely ammount of time in Sandstorm or lying on seabed in depths far greater than just 1,5 metres for crappy 30 minutes which does not impress anyone.

So once again as long as there is no warranty for device when being exposed to any kind of liquid like salt seawater, chlorinated water etc. dust, sand etc. Whether user have or dont have IPXX rating it reallly does not matter because its nothing but a costly gimmick compared to said case which makes significant difference protecting your device from any kind of harm from water, other liquids, dust, sand clay and cost like 2 euros on alliexpress etc.
Few rubbers and seals if not included in warranty does not help at all if you have bad luck you have to pay very expensive repair. In case of water damage you can pay 2-3 times more than is the cost of brand new device.

About the main screen is the same. Durability equal to piece of chalk used in school.
Bar phone is a win win and this whole hype around folables will be good to reman in history books. Said foldable market is growing and yet every year is less and less phones sold and even less foldables are sold.
Since you cant use screen protector and any even the most tiny damage will break your main screen and repair cost are 1000+ there is no use for foldables and only those who earn enough to buy even 10 phones like this a day would be interested because those dont care for money.
                        Its simple as that.
                        End of story.

Not getting either. Foldables just don’t appeal to me (at least right now): there’s too many trade-offs for extremely little to no benefit. Plus, my almost 4 yo phone is still working perfectly fine, so I have no need to fix it or upgrade it anyway. Which reminds me, these are also an absolute pain to fix (both in terms of difficulty and price). That needs to change asap.

Regular phones are just better in every way than foldables. They are too exp and don't bring anything other than possibly big screen fold. I have the Fold 3 using S22 ultra and now s23 ultra instead. Want a big phone just get a regular one (s23 ultr or similar). Want a small phone s23 regular or ZenFone, no point to the flip and fold phones

There are no changes, if I really want to buy a foldable I will choose Fold4 which is still good. Or the newest cheap ones like Phantom V Fold and Find N2.

Apologies, Samsung, but it appears that both your Flip and your Watch 6 have left us wanting in terms of meaningful upgrades. We eagerly await what the next year has in store!
