Aspect Ratio of 21:9 is pretty good, much more usable than Samsung's weird 19:9 ratio. What is disappointing is the particular properties of the displays Sony use. They aren't as bright, as fast, or as efficient as the other flagship devices out there. So besides the aspect ratio difference, it feels like a one-generation step back in display overall. That is not something you usually tolerate at prices over USD $1000 in the luxury segment. Their smaller device, the Sony 5 mk IV, does a bit better due to its display efficiency. But again the same reasons apply.

Is this a deal-breaker?
Not always, but it is upto the individual. As an example, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series have been using chipsets that were 1-2 generations behind the other flagship options. Again, that could be a dealbreaker on its own, but it ultimately depends on the individual. Yet, the more pricey a phone becomes, the less excuses they have for not having competitive features (chipset, display, camera, etc etc).

Anonymous, 29 Jul 2023Capping out at 256GB at that price range feels a bit... Foo... moreThey actually once moved the base storage for the Xperia 1 IV last year to a single combo of 12 GB RAM and 512 GB ROM for US market release, another move that Sony still cares about for the US market despite prioritizing them the last it since the shift (another one was the controversial movement of the fingerprint sensor from side to back in 2018 Xperias to enable the FPS due to a patent dispute in the USA since Z5 to XZ1), but some people weren't pleased with the price of the 1 IV ($1600) despite being rewarded for the best combo only seen in Taiwan, Hong Kong (Sony's two best markets outside Japan), and Japan, so Sony decided to set it back to 256 GB again for the USA and cut down back again the price. A 16/512 combo of 1 V is only offered in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japan again, AFAIK.

256gb for 1,400 dollars, this mobile thing is getting out of hand

14 comments already (15 with mine)? Sony has really been a comment-magnet on this site since the beginning, lol.

We're talking about S23 Ultra and 14 Pro Max competition and the Xperia isn't the most expensive, at least where I live.
It also has great specs going for it. Switched from a 13 Pro that I couldn't stand any more and I just love what the 1 V has to offer.
People need to look way past iPhone and Samsung, they could be pleasantly surprised.

Luis, 29 Jul 2023i agree, Sony phones are freaking expensive and Camera samp... morePrecisely... the photos are natural at best and the software is a headache to use. Honestly, if this is aimed towards pro-photographers... er.. don't they already have actual pro-cameras to take better pictures?! 😅

Kangal, 29 Jul 2023I think if you compare this to the likes of its direct comp... moreThe most interesting thing is that the screen is NEVER rendering natively at 3840*1644, even if you modify the system. The best you can get is upscaled 2K. Check this. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/high-resolution-mod-for-xperia-1-iv.4517435/

I think if you compare this to the likes of its direct competitors; Samsung S23 Ultra, Google Pixel 7 Pro, and Xiaomi 13 Ultra, it comes up extremely well. The biggest differences and drawbacks it has are:
                      - virtually unknown advertising and marketing
                      - much smaller availability worldwide
                      - only a 2-Year Software Update cycle instead of 4-Years from Samsung
                      - little hardware support or repair direct from manufacturer
                      - no discounts, sales, higher prices generally
                      - less accessories for cases and etc
                      - a more fluid and Stock OS, less bloat (some people love the bloat/features)
                      - screen not as good as other options (less efficient, not as fast, unnecessarily high-res, etc)

                        Must be amazing to you.

No phone above $250 should use screen from China Star, Visionox , Tiamna nor Boe.

Ron, 29 Jul 2023the only good things from Sony are headphones and PlayStati... moreIMHO, their image sensors and cameras are their best products by far. Sony headphones were always just average at best. I mean, the latest WF-1000XM5 looks nice, but I would not be surprised if even Bose alternative would pretty much steam roll it (not to mention better brands that focus on sound quality).
