Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra to feature a 50MP 3x telephoto camera

09 August 2023
It's said to use the same 200MP sensor from the S23 Ultra, though.

Hope this works like the iPhone 2x mode where they crop into the middle 12mp so it’s essentially a 3x and a 6x which would be a good intermediate between the 3x and 10x

50 divided by 4 = 12.5MP quad bayer OR 50 actual Megapixels? I do wish this vital disctinction is ALWAYS made clear by staff posting "news".
For me this problem is greatly exacerbated by having the knowledge that Samsung's 108MP quad bayer main camera sensor, as found in phones from a few years back, has far greater resolution that the 200MP divided by SIXTEEN comes out at 12MP by the time Samsung have done, and thats on the main cam, already tiny pixels binned x16 to give people shelling out over a thousand pounds a TWELVE megapixel sensor on these phones when the old Samsung had TWENTYSEVEN megapixel, so this is still reversed evolution/no progress/ going back to Nokia N8 in 2010 days for a main camera sensor resolution? So the telephoto will not be 50MP but 12MP, right?

Anonymous, 10 Aug 2023if is a small sensor useless ultrawide still the same from... moreI don't think there's much you can do with an ultrawide camera, even if you give a Quad or Nona Bayer sensor. Even the zoom range for ultrawide camera is far from wide compared to telephoto camera.

So 6 x zoom will be fine with this 50 MP camera. Quality degradation will be minimal to nil.

Anonymous, 10 Aug 2023samsung is adding in 3-4 years now the same improvements t... moreBecause they have got their camera system on point. There are minor weaknesses, and so, they are adressing each problems, year after year. Their cameras are the best overall, when you take into consideration all the aspects like the D.R across all zoom ranges, and no weird differences in color science across zoom ranges, good video quality Across All the Zoom Range etc.
Can they improve every small shortcomings in their camera system within a year- Probably Yes. Will they correct it all within the next year- Probably not.
I am not saying that other phones don't shoot good photos, on the contrary, I believe Vivo X90 Pro+ shoots amazing photos from it main camera, But it is hard to beat Samsung when you put the entire camera system into the mix and evaluate it altogether.

Anonymous, 10 Aug 2023is a gimmick , i had s23 ultra and x90 pro+ taking full res... moreI never said anything about shooting in full 200mp. On the contrary, I believe you should only use either the 50mp mode or the 12mp mode. I was talking about the flexibility to do so, when compared to the 108mp of the earlier generations, where you could only shoot in either 12mp or 108mp, where the latter had issues in overly contrasty and dim scenes.
I would still be happy if it was a 50mp sensor offering the same flexibilty, i.e, to shoot in 50mp with full HDR capability and great details (kinda like s23,23+), but instead we got 200mp, which can do 50mp.

And it will be the same 2.5/1 sensor, just like the ultrawide and 10x, despite the ultrawide and 10x having fake large circles on the outside.
