Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra to feature a 50MP 3x telephoto camera

09 August 2023
It's said to use the same 200MP sensor from the S23 Ultra, though.

if is a small sensor useless
ultrawide still the same from s20 or s21 ultra?hahaha what a joke samsung have become

My phone has 4 4 lenses. Only use one. I guess same for most.

Anton., 10 Aug 2023And what good is it? if the best of oppo does not leave chinaYou're completely missing the point that I'm trying to make, but sure.

Wrong. The lens itself is indeed 65mm equivalent, but the camera app has a zoom shortcut on 3x(=69mm). Xiaomi's approach is quite deceptive in comparison, because they *advertised* the medium-tele camera to have 12.5MP at 75mm when in reality it only had a 60mm lens - A massive difference.

If you think otherwise, show me the EXIF data of the raw file from Find X6 Pro's telephoto camera, then I'll believe you.

I want to buy this upcoming S series Galaxy but I highly doubt that the upcoming series is not what I expected. In my opinion, 12MP camera is more than enough, only need to improve the zoom feature. Well, what can I expect and why should I expect it?

Obviiusly you will never admit, despite being there ...

There is crop, lens is not 65mm.
Xiaomi is using bit digital crop too.
3rd and 4th cam are not that range.

Only this cam setup would take easily 70-80% of inner space.

Sensor shift is not type of OIS. Only apple and gsmarena thinks so.

Ottonis, 09 Aug 2023As long as we don't know the sensor size of this 3x ca... moreMy wish is almost similar too. Albiet, I would want the main sensor to be bigger than the rest. If Samsung is using ISOCELL, I would want a new 1/1.2" main sensor (either a 50mp or 200mp), followed by a 64mp GW2 sensor (1/1.7x") or the 50mp GN5 (1/1.56) for the Ultrawide and the 3x Tele. Meanwhile, for the 10x supertele, I don't know what the limitations they might have with the folded periscope system, but it would be great to have atleast a 12mp 1/2.55" or, Ideally, a 1/2" sensor. That would make for a very comprehensive camera setup.

Darth Caesium, 09 Aug 2023They should completely abandon the idea of using a 200MP se... moreThe slight issue with that, despite it being a genius idea and going with Huawei's effective true variable-aperture approach, is that the benefits will probably only be seen in the RAW option or Expert RAW, both of which are supposed to dial back on software processing. It'll be good for photographers but for the average consumer they'd be getting the same superficially good photos that get the crop-in watercolor effect. Unless Samsung removes/tones down their noise reduction processing somehow, or retrain their algorithm entirely.

Of course, most average, non-photographer Samsung consumers don't bother to crop into photos, so they're usually blissfully ignorant of these problems, like sheep. But they've been getting ripped off.

Kingchin33, 09 Aug 2023Samsung Galaxy S23 primary 200MP camera sensor has tiny 0.6... moreThe pixel size I understand. And I was talking about the 50MP 3x telephoto sensor for the 24 Ultra, not the 200MP main. I agree with you on that.

But Samsung was skimping on the 108MP sensors by restricting results to either 12.5MP or 108MP. Xiaomi did 4x (25/27MP) with their Mi 10 line with excellent results (as an owner of the Mi Note 10/Mi 10 Pro), though they went the traditional 12.5 route afterwards. Motorola also did the 4x bin for their Edge Plus (2020) with mixed results, but it's commendable they still offered the flexibility of options.

I've seen the photographer comparisons/reviews (although not so much on the expert RAW side).

My main point is that Samsung is still too stuck on pointlessly nerfing their cameras with noise reduction, and not allowing higher-resolution options (like 20/25MP (10 or 8 bin) option for 200MP sensors) just makes it worse. With Samsung's processing in their default camera app, cropping in to ANY 1x shot usually gets you oversmoothened, "watercolor" effect images and you need to use RAW or a third party app/port like Gcam to actually use the potential of their sensors, and even then it's still limited to 12.5 MP most of the time. This has been the case since the S8/S9 and I still see people complaining about the watercolor images on S20-S23 series, meaning it's still not fixed. Samsung just got lazy, making the Expert RAW app as a "fix" rather than integrating it into their default camera and/or retraining their app's software processing/algorithm entirely.

On most other phones - Pixel, Apple, OnePlus, Xiaomi and etc - this watercolor effect usually happens when zooming to a level that isn't supported by the telephoto sensor or sensor crop (which is to be expected), but 1x shots usually have a good amount of detail in most cases and the expected noise if there's poor light. But what's important is that it looks like a natural result, whereas Samsung's results are more superficial and like a facade, it falls apart when you get closer to look at the fine details.

The S10 series was basically the peak of Samsung's cameras due to the fact it had Gcam ports, elevating it to results on par with the Pixel 3, which meant a good amount of fine detail and natural results.

Would be cool to see an S24 (non ultra) rocking the design of the old Note 10.

Oppo definitely showed others how to implement short-medium range telephoto cameras are supposed to be implemented (A massive type 1/1.55 sensor at 65mm equivalent focal length). And no, I don't want another "50MP" JN1 on a company's most expensive offering whose strength is supposed to be the camera performance.

With heavy sharpening Samsung is applying in their cameras, it doesn't matter how many megapixel, the result will be ruined by its bad software, I currently have a S23 Ultras, useless for portraits.

They should completely abandon the idea of using a 200MP sensor, and go back to using 50MP. Seriously, the only reason why it might be useful is if it's on a periscope telephoto, for better reach, and even then, no one has made a periscope telephoto for a phone that has a 200MP 1/1.31"-type sensor, because it would require too much space, both for the lenses needed and for the bezels necessary for heat dissipation. I wish they were bigger, but for now, this is as good as we're going to get.

The S25 Ultra should look like this:

                                      •50MP, variable f/1.4-f/1.9-f/4.0 (3-step), 24mm (wide), 90° FoV, 1.0"-type, 1.6μm, Octa Pixel multi-directional PDAF (1cm-∞), Laser AF (∞-20cm), dual OIS (3-axis sensor-shift, 2-axis lens-shift)

                                      •50MP, variable f/1.4-f/1.9-f/4.0 (3-step), 12mm (ultrawide), 126° FoV, 1.0"-type, 1.6μm, Octa Pixel multi-directional PDAF (1cm-∞), Laser AF (∞-20cm), dual OIS (3-axis sensor-shift, 2-axis lens-shift)

                                      •50MP, variable f/2.4-f/4.0 (8-step), continuous 72-240mm (periscope telephoto), 60° FoV, 1/2.0"-type, 0.8μm, Octa Pixel multi-directional PDAF (1cm-∞), Laser AF (∞-20cm), dual OIS (3-axis sensor-shift, 2-axis lens-shift), 3-10× continuous optical zoom

                                      •0.3MP, ToF 3D LiDAR (depth/Laser AF)

Now this would be revolutionary, unlike what they've been doing for the past 3 years or so.
