Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra won't be heavier than the S23 Ultra despite the titanium frame

17 August 2023
Titanium is denser and tougher than aluminum so it would be interesting to know how Samsung achieved this.

Funny how they think we're stupid enough to think that titaniunm is heavy and posted this 'news'.

BrianCoriour, 17 Aug 2023Wouldnt carbon fibre work the same. Its stronger than steel... moreCarbon is very prone to scratches and minor surface damage, the fibres may easily start to loosen. Then the frame would be easy to break. For longevity the carbon has to be covered by some protective layer (paint, lacquer, foil).

Anonymous, 17 Aug 2023you need far less titanium to obtain the same thing as alum... moreFor 1 mm thick frame you need the same amount of titanium as aluminium. The titanium frame will be heavier, but also much stronger and bend-resistant.

neoxcool, 17 Aug 2023No surprise that Samsung did make it lighter by 1g but Tita... moreTitanium is about 50 % lighter than steel, but much heavier than aluminium, so they probably managed this by making a thinner and better optimised frame.

BrianCoriour, 17 Aug 2023Wouldnt carbon fibre work the same. Its stronger than steel... moreCarbon fibre doesn't conduct heat as good as metals do, so this may be the reason IMO

Anonymous, 17 Aug 2023Maybe bigger battery Or bigger screen. ( 7 inch ) Let keep the positivity going

BrianCoriour, 17 Aug 2023Wouldnt carbon fibre work the same. Its stronger than steel... moreJust a wild guess as I haven't got a tame one.

Carbon fibre used in e.g. motorcycle helmet and bicycle frames.

Titanium and Carbon Fibre are both very tough, however Titanium Strength to Weigh ratio is better than that of Carbon Fibre.

In short you have to use more carbon fibre as is less dense (must not mention Twitter actually that is a very low bar to beat) to 'mirror' the effects of Titanium.

Carbon Fibre would most likely increase the size of phone however marginally, additionally fibres are woven.

              Segue
Now Xiaomi Mix fold 3 will have a special Carbon Fibre version which I posted on, and that got me thinking.

Maybe it's me but when phones are launching, you always see them presented, no case, no screen protector, just as is.

Essentially saying this product is tough both internally and externally

BrianCoriour, 17 Aug 2023Wouldnt carbon fibre work the same. Its stronger than steel... moreI belive that carbon fiber is bad at asorbing shock correct me if I am wrong. So basicly it's a good material if you don't strain it or make it absorbe shock like impacts and that stuff. And It's high electrical conduit, so that is why it's used in cars or aerospace where it makes sense to do so like car wings, hoods etc.

They really need better 3x camera to function better between 3x and 10x, with 50mpx they got it covered.
Would be gold to have 10x also with 50mpx but not so much like 3x.
What is realy lscking is main cam needs to be 1inch finally as well.
200mpx or not 1inch is better than 1/1.35 as is now.

I can't wait for the EU to force smartphone brands to bring back the SD card slot + 3.5mm jack, just like with the USB-C or removable batteries.

Titanium is durable as hell, I wanna hope Samsung will offer at least 6 years of updates for the upcoming Ultra.

You don't want such a classy device to become unsupported in just 4 years.

Density is directly proportional to mass (keeping volume constant), hence between 1 mm thick aluminium and titanium frame, titanium frame is heavier.
