Luxor, 21 Aug 2023Just build it with plastic body and get rid of the IP ratin... morePlastic body maybe. But removing IP rating highly unlikely as even A series have IP rating. Though in real life it isn't a huge deal unless you swim with your phone.

Darth Caesium, 21 Aug 2023This to me suggests that foldables are getting much cheaper... moreNo. There are many ways to perform cuts.
It is not they are getting cheaper.

        1) simpler outer screen like ones used by A series could easily be $25-30 cheaper.
        2) simpler SoC that can be half price of 8g2 ($80 less)
        3) ufs3.1 and ddr5 ram instead of ufs4.0/ddr5x
        4) two rear cameras instead of three
        5) no UDC for inner display
        6) older glass versions like GG5 or 6

Samsung has many ways to make cuts.
Cuts that easily would decrease costs by $130-150

Why don't they focus on making an S23 FE that is actually a "Fan" Edition. It needs a Snapdragon chip to be like what the S20 FE 5G was - a budget flagship with all of the performance (minus the quality issues this time, hopefully they've learnt).

A cheapo foldable is bound to be an aftersales disaster. I can already see them taking shortcuts on the durability.

As FE it will start at 1000 with components of dubious quality and exinos, then if they see that it turns out they will increase them like the normal FE series, which started at a price and is already double the initial price

Luxor, 21 Aug 2023Just build it with plastic body and get rid of the IP ratin... moreAnd make the hinges creak.

rizki1, 21 Aug 2023Tecno already made a $1100 foldable earlier this year... th... moreYea but 99.99% of the population dont know who tecno is and no one knows if itll get updates and support for 3+ years atleast.

The only way to make it cheap would be to make the hinges creak when ever you open it and close.

Just build it with plastic body and get rid of the IP rating. Boom! Cheaper already. Get rid of the front screen on the flip. I see a drastic price drop.

That'll probably give the haters less reason to hate on the foldables

They are going to use Exynos again and that will burn a hole through the screen, mark my words.

AnonD-512010, 21 Aug 2023Finally! Cheaper FoldablesTecno already made a $1100 foldable earlier this year... that's the cheapest foldable yet.

It's about time they do that!
Make the FE edition a combo spec of Flip and Fold 4/5 while giving Ultra specs to "real" Folds and Flips.

This to me suggests that foldables are getting much cheaper to manufacture. Hopefully, premium foldables end up having the same or almost the same quality cameras, while being somewhat cheaper to buy.

                                Finally! Cheaper Foldables
