Weekly poll: do you use a screen protector and a case?

27 August 2023
Some people carry their phone with no extra protection, others feel safer with a protector. Some see cases as a style add-on, others as unnecessary bulk.

Sort by:

Case yes. Screen protector no. My phone's screen is beautiful and scratch resistant.

I really hate cases, but I have no choise than using them. All the phones are with glass back and the problem is not that they will broke, but they are extremelly slippery and slide even on almost horizontal surfaces. Currently I have Samsung S22 and I like very much how it looks without a case, but I carry it with silicone case. And for the screen protector - the ultrasonic fingerprint reader doesn't work with glass, so I use a foil screen protector. I know the glass of the phone is very durable, but it can scratch very easy. But fortunatelly I found german Utection screen protectors, which are very easy to apply with special holders for fixing them properly. Now I am waiting for carbon back sticker to see if is not slippery and to get rid of the cases.

Anonymous, 28 Aug 2023Because 99.9% of people don't drop their phone on dail... moreIn your dreams yes. People drop their phones all the time. You see so many damaged phones with cracked screens, smashed back glass, and quite a lot of cracked screen protectors. Reality is different : people abuse their phones and do not seem to care.

GSM Arena should create a poll to ask why people use a casing. In my little brain I still find it really hard to understand humans (myself included). Why the hell do we design devices that must be beautiful before practical? Why do we make stuff that you are afraid of using because it might drop and/or be damaged and as result of it we tuck it away in ugly casings. Yes I said ugly casings because no matter how nice or how fit for purpose the casing is, it ruins the initial design of the phone. Weird, very weird beings these humans. I'm pretty convinced that if aliens would watch us the would say just that.

And you only need to drop it once for it to stay broken forever.

I think case is a nice way to personalize my phones, some of them looked nice & some place even offer custom made order. As for screen protector, it's nice to be able to easily replace it once the oleophobic coating starting to wear off.

Oki, 27 Aug 2023I never used screen protector because they always cracked a... moreI mean, if your screen protector cracks, but your screen didn't - that's your victory.

"My tank's rpg cage blew up!"
              "did your tank?"
              "no, it was fine."

If you find the cost prohibitive, it's likely because you're looking at standard retail for your protectors - the markup there is psychotic. Try eBay or Aliexpress - just be wary, the sacrifice is a degree of unreliability regarding sizing. Mostly works out, though.

Ie, locally I'd pay about $30 for a tempered glass protector. Buying 'direct', it's less than $7 for 4.

Key thing is protector is removable, crack and scratch are not. Sometimes there's even utility in it. I actually have a tempered glass + a matte film (look, I'd love 'em merged but God seems to have a particular fondness for spiting me - course, I give the finger right back, being a defiant little shit, hehehe) because that tablet does double-duty for artistic purposes and it mimics paper well to have that matte covering.

Anyway, if the price is too high, you're probably not looking in the right places. Not your fault, most sense is "go to store, find, good" when it comes to getting things.

Oh - and there is the distinct advantage of getting it quicker hehehe.

I actually keep a roll of matte lamination, which I shooped a template for my phone screen - if I'm without for some reason (ie, when I got it) I can just use a paper cutter and that to get one cut out ez pz. Temp tho, for sure.

Blur, 27 Aug 2023Phones are absolutely not tough enough to "go commando... moreI have a motto I apply to anyone saying something on a moral front, but frankly, it's rather universal:

Principle requires payment, for words are worth nothing more than their cost - and freely spoken are of course the price of free.

Never believe a word that isn't backed by collateral.

Now, forgive me if I'm out of the loop... but I've literally never been able to get a scratched screen covered under warranty. Gorilla glass doesn't cover it. The phone manu doesn't cover it.

So am I to be taken by faith of marketing that Gorilla glass will stay pristine in the day to day? That it will stand up to life?

Interesting how even they will not underwrite their claims with any obligation or collateral?

If a company says they don't trust their product enough to risk money if it can't do what it claims ...

                Believe them.

Apple Rules , 28 Aug 2023what? scratches quickly?? That's nonsense. everyone... moreYea, I'll concede my evidence is anecdotal as yours, but I constantly see damaged displays. Whatever you want to chock it up to - I still maintain that they aren't lifeproof, and I just have certain qualms with the notion of what appears to be very common and *permanent* (key operator here) damage being worth so much that a simple, cheap protector ruins things.

As to your fast charge comment - invalid, and an absolutely moronic line to attempt to draw between pins.

Firstly, while I think one should do whatever best practice is for batteries, it's not a permanent aesthetic problem that can interfere with the actual way your phone interface displays, it doesn't affect texture and is for all intents and purposes totally irrelevant in this discussion.

You'll pay if you take bad care of your battery. I know that first hand - turns out (little PSA for the unaware) that attempting to charge a cold phone via Qi is... not great for it.

But that was a question of $15 on amazon and some unfortunate tedium with glue. Not $120+ for a screen.

A battery, all things considered, is pretty easy to replace, and extremely cheap. Screens... are not. And worst case, if it's just an issue of battery life v. Actual physical compromise... it's not shoved in your face quite so blatantly.

I don't research fast charge because I don't use it. Got a few cheapo chinese qi pucks and the calm night to charge, so it's never been a thing for me.

Phones are made of all the best materials for conducting force straight into the worst places now, so going without a case is just asking for it. It ain't called an accident because it's planned, and anyone who makes out like they're immune well - good luck.

It's a really, really hard sell imo that some orgasmic joy from the authentic screen is worth the difference.

Y'know why I know Gorilla glass ain't worth the trademark?

Cause they don't warranty it. Simple as that. It is the greatest irony people put such faith in a product the maker itself won't. If your screen scratches or cracks or whatever, tough luck.

At least cases are pretty settled as effective. And some even warranty damaged equipment. Tempered glass also proves itself, and while easier damaged, perhaps... does have that really small benefit of idk, being inordinately cheaper to replace?

$3, an essentially unaltered device, and you're good to go. Or... spend well, the cheapest I've ever seen a current screen go is like, $20, but the big guys all run over $100, 'direct'. "oh no, the glass is so different an experience from ... glass?"

Good for you if you wanna take the risk, but it's a very perplexing perspective to me, and I do think the folks doing it probably have a lil' too much money on their hands.

Hydrogen screen protector doesn't affect touch screen sensitivity much. Frosted glass is too slippery to handle without any case.
