Weekly poll: does the Sony Xperia 5 V deserve a place in your pocket?

03 September 2023
It's priced as a flagship and delivers the great photo, video and audio quality we expect. But it does have flaws that still haven't been fixed.

10v is one doing worse than previous.

You do not ask Apple and Samsung to lower price when they make phones worse than previous.

Iphone 14 is nothing better than 13.
S23 is worse than S20.

1v can do over 1h of 4K@60 without dropping single frame, all this while recording at 150Mbps, using wind filter, eye AF and tracking.

4k video is much harder than silly antutu, wildlife, geekbench.

RoG 6 pro without t the external cooling had weak results. Overheated , while powered by 8+g1 and glorified Tsmc fab

Too expensive and screen is too small. And speakers seem to totally lack bass, no idea why the review claims otherwise. With song 5 from the review it's obvious. Only mid-frequencies are great.

The overall spec is good for me. But, the price is much for just 2 years of OS update 🤦🏻‍♂️ I rather buy new iPhone with that price 🙄

Telephoto removal ruined the whole phone.

I hope Sony learns from this mistake for the next Xperia 5…

If they still give 2 system updates then no it is useless for me.

YUKI93, 03 Sep 2023I am impressed with this phone's battery performance f... moreI don't know about you, but I do think there should be an upper-midrange Xperia. I mean, Sony can just take the existing Xperia 5 v, replace the 8 Gen 2 chipset with something like 782G or 7+ Gen 2, and sell it for around $699 to $799. I'm sure there are lots of people who do want compact phones but don't need crazy overkill chipset like 8 Gen 2.

Still happy with my current Xperia 1 iv despite the occasional overheating warning. I might wait for Xperia 1 vi with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset to come in, although it all depends if 8 Gen 3 will be as heat efficient as 8 Gen 2.

Anders, 03 Sep 2023I genuinely hope Sony have absolutely abysmal sales with th... moreTrue. They haven't solved the hardware issues present from the last few generations.
The fingerprint sensor goes missing in settings and there is no solution for it. It has been a common issue on all recent series of Sony flagship phones.
The green line/ pink line issue has also affected the Xperia 5 IV and has been present since 5 II.
The torch is bad compared to Samsung/ Apple.
They have made the 5 series telephoto lens worse every generation.
The apps refreshes in the background so fast when using another app.
As a Sony user myself, I am finding it difficult to continue to invest in this series. Most probably, 5 IV will be my last Sony phone.

                      As a heater, yes.

For 300€ i will buy a s21u and keep the rest.
I like this sony but the software is limited and it's hard to find a service near me for them.

I genuinely hope Sony have absolutely abysmal sales with this. Like their worst ever. Which will hopefully force them into 2 obvious choices. 1, make better phones, at better pricing. Or 2, just go away.

Seriously, when was the last time Sony released a flagship without throttling issues? They're obviously not even trying anymore. Same thing with the display. It hasn't improved in 3 years. Now they've removed the telephoto camera. Pathetic!

To be honest, I kinda like Sony's aspect ratio, as it keeps the width of the phone holdable. The only problem is Sony phones, value wise overall, is quite poor to me compared to even Samsung or iPhones. Sony is truly after the ultra niche market, that for a general consumers, their phones are not really a good fit in value for the money.

I am impressed with this phone's battery performance from the review, but I made my decision. Since I am a full-time mobile photographer/videographer, the Xperia 1 Mk5 is my choice. However, I have zero hesitation in recommending this phone to anyone who doesn't care about having the best camera hardware and only cares about having a Snapdragon 8 series SoC, a headphone jack, and a microSD card slot.

what people should realize is that sony is a niche brand and as such they cannot just give out the devices for free or for less than they're worth and get the money back by selling data like most chinese companies, they need to make the most money out of the actual purchases and they cannot take too many risks

Seems like Sony has pulled out from Indian market and in general for the asking price there are better alternatives out there.
