In smartphones, **specifically**. Other devices they make do not count. Forgive my ignorance, as I haven't used an Apple device since the iPhone 4S (and haven't looked back), but... I don't think a significantly large portion of their users actually use Lightning-to-Lightning cables beyond charging, no? The phones are expensive as it is and even more expensive just to get into the Apple ecosystem. I presume everyone already uses Lightning-to-USB_Type-A so that's a nonstarter.
The real point of all this is that nobody (in the EU) wants pointless dongles and competing standards. Europeans already saw the futility of it, and Apple could only maintain that for so long, hence the directive. It simply runs contrary to EU as a combined entity of shared goals. So as the arrow of time trudges on, the amount of Apple users on older Lightning-based will simply shrink. It's one of those first-world problems we might call "temporary" circumstances. Or more accurately: literally meaningless.

Apple for years has NOT supplied either Cable, Charger, or Earphones.
Imo what Apple should have done is supplied a lightning port to type C adapter in the box with the new iPhone.
By supplying a Type C cable, people with other Apple products have to carry TWO cable, a Type C and a lightning (please others don't mention wireless etc let's keep it on point)
The point of NOT providing a cable was to go greener.
iPhone users already have a lightning cable, which they presumably use cross appliances.
By doing this there will be 85 million additional Type C cables issued this year alone

Does anyone actually like USB-C? It's been the weak link on my devices, eventually wearing loose and requiring plug replacements. Say what you will about proprietary plugs, Lightning doesn't suffer from this.

They can create more frames per kg without having to send waste to get recycled, before getting back usable material. It is overall faster manufacturer throughput which they need because they can't keep up with demand. So they are looking for ways to produce faster. Environmental savings is a obvious benefit because usually to produce faster you have to do more with less and less means less waste, that is inevitable in a resource constrainted environment.

MFi is most definitely staying and will become the defacto alternative to Thunderbolt in the Apple ecosystem they will eventually phase out Thunderbolt support.

Critical thinking is completely dead. Where the actual #$@& do you think the waste material goes? Thin air? Space? Jupiter? There is no environmentally friendly about it. Metal 3D printing, if it does work, would be a faster and fewer step process than current milling tech, but c'mon eco friendly? Get a grip. This is on the same level as someone trying to convince me the water cycle isn't real. (that actually happened by the way - you don't wanna know)

Ever since wireless charging has been introduced, I've never understood reviewers who file the lack of it as a "con" on a smartphones review. Has to be the single gimmickiest feature in all smartphones history. Even the IR Blaster makes more sense, and uses.
-Uses more energy
-Charges much, MUCH slower
-Gains you about 5 secs over plugging a cable in, then loses over 2 hours on charging
I've never understood the people whining about the lack of wireless charging, and I never will.

It doesn't matter anymore if u have 30w or 40 50 - 100 - 200.. Kids boys here still putting smartphones and it batteries from the past where we had crappy removable batteries.. They would die with fast charging overnight.. Today really doesn't matter because smartphones with very fast charging has dual cell so that "100W" or 200W isn't reality.. Each cell receives half of power with supplied charger and it doesn't really hurt battery because I have oppo where today android has so many options how the battery will be charged or delivered
It is basically AI based optimised charging and even if I have 80w charger with my oppo Reno8 Pro I can set slow charging overnight so it will auto slow down charging speed
