Weekly poll: will you use the Fairphone 5 for the next 8 years?

10 September 2023
The phone will get software support for at least that long, possibly up to 10 years. And it comes with 5 years warranty and the best repairability of any current phone.

    Who? Never heard of it.
    Never going to use/buy one.

The problem with Fairphone isn't the fact that their phones are overpriced, it's that the limited availability means people who want to support their cause have to pay ridiculous importing fees and deal with warranty with those fees.

What do you mean ? that you get the parts for free or something ? If there phone is already expensive then the parts be also very expensive compare to other brands as they add on the parts also there fair wage percent.

Biggest problem with it chipset, it's max 3 years chipset, because it is already old and not flagship it's performance will show age for sure after 3 years, forget 5 years, it will be painful to use in 5 years. If it would have better chipset and zoom 3rd camera it would be perfect, but now who stops people for taking like OnePlus 11 it will easely last 5 years no problem and beats the shit out of the Fairphone 5.

It initially starts off expensive. But if you can replace the battery and other items throughout time as required then it's ongoing cost falls dramatically over its life cycle compared with other phones. But this depends on the modular nature of the parts and who is making them, will it be Fairphone or will there be a secondary market created who will supply. The only other thing is tech support. Will app creators etc support that chipset and it's setup 6-8 years from now? Sometimes app updates don't work as well on older phones than new ones, not sure why this happens but it does. This might be the reason Fairphone picked this particular chipset.

Never mind that Apple workers get fair labor based on the location they work in. Factories that build the phones usually are not working under the brand names so Apple and Samsung dont pay them there wage.

I dont think it's fair for customers that brands like FP is ripping off there customers in the name of fair wages that are higher then there own country where the brand is registrated average pay.

You think it's fair for customers to pay more for the product just so the brand can pay 3000 plus euro for there workers and that be the simple workers as the higher your position the higher they pay.

Think of it this way as when you buy Chinese phones is that your helping out these people who get to have a job in these 3rd world countries. People who dont understand the larger picture always complain about low wages in these 3rd world countries. But cant think that these people who work in these places are happy to even have a work to earn living.

It's easy to think about fair wages when you live in comfort in a 1st world countries where your problems are what pronoun someone is

This is already better than the last one in all but price. They'll come down in price as volume increases, hopefully they make a cheaper version and/or partner with other smartphone companies to increase volume.

I'd still like it to be lighter, since if you drop a phone it's mass will determine the impact shockwave's energy. Not needing to replace a screen is far better than being able to do it yourself.

It's looking promising but I'm not rich enough to essentially fund the Fairphone's development.

OLED materials and construction are all constantly improving so burnout shouldn't be as much of an issue as it was when it first came out, and will be even less of an issue in the future.

The camera modules should be designed to be upgradable. Currently the Fairfone 3 and 4 users can't swap to the Fairfone 5 cameras and so on. Providing software updates for a long time is great, but, with no new features, no better camera capabilities, it would not be a good thing.
Maybe it could be useful for companies where they provide phones to employees for specific purposes like scanning stuff (like delivery or hotel checkin or so).

                                    its too expensive
i would use it its fast enough but i can buy a34 for 250euro the n after 4 years a38 which will be miles ahead of fairphone

400-500 would be good price but 700 is s23 which can last much better even with half the updates

i use s10e and even though updates are almost finished and stuck on android 12 everything runs smoothly and i can see myself using it for another 2years

One thing I don't get about these repairable "modular" gadgets is, while the option is good for repairability/upgradeability, they just don't seem as durable. Especially for phones that pretty much last years without a hiccup these days, I just don't see the major point?

first of the IOS is not the best OS in the world, it is one of if not the worst in the phone world.
once you restrict things, you are already lower than others.

back on topic, yes only if the price is right to the specification offered, I mind paying a premium just for the ability to repair my phone or modular concept. the trade-off is not sweet enough. I am not an ethical user but rather a pragmatic tech savvy user.
