There is of course a caveat - you're not getting unlimited free replacements.

Scenario 1 (better scenario): You do end up selling the phone but the person who bought the phone will then use that phone for a year at maximum before the battery truly fails. Then the phone will either be sold for parts or thrown out.

Scenario 2 (worse scenario): You fail to sell said phone so you throw it out and create more e-waste.

The ACTUAL Problem with glued-in batteries is that the rest of the phone is still completely functional, it's just the battery that fails.

That creates a situation where thousands of phones get thrown into scrapyards when they can still be fixed with a simple battery replacement or at least used as spare parts for another phone that has, let's say, a broken motherboard or a broken charging port etc. That is extremely bad for the environment.

You don't know how many fixable phones get thrown out every day just because their battery has failed. What the EU is trying to do with this new regulation is to limit that in a reasonable way.

With replaceable batteries, phones that are 5-10 years old can still work like new with a simple battery swap (Example: My 11 year old Galaxy S3 Mini still works like new with a replacement battery).

This will solve the problem of people not buying used phones, too, since all that is required to put in a new battery. That would make that same phone usable again in the hands of a new user for many years to come, instead of being thrown out.
