Xiaomi 13 with imx800 >>>> xiaomi 14

Anonymous, 25 Oct 2023The price ratio are tiny when you talk about phones that ar... moreThey still have the smallest margins among the big players. . . Nothing has changed there, though the cost of materials increasing and general inflation is a thing. Even apple's flagships costed $400 in the past. If the 13 Ultra had an apple logo it would easily cost 50-100 % more for the higher resolution and brighter display, HDR10+, significantly bigger and more expensive camera HW, twice the amount of RAM and the bigger battery with twice the charging speed due both the upgrade from PD 2.0 to 3.0 and better heat dissipation.

S23 Ultra does no better. Still limited to an 8-bit display (yikes), still no DV licensing agreement, smaller and cheaper camera sensors all around and again the slower charging due to weaker battery charging and corresponding BMS and heat management.

Keep in mind that we now have sensors like the IMX989, GN2 and HM3 because Xiaomi is spending millions co-developing this HW because they want better camera HW. Meanwhile the rest lags years behind on cheaper off the shelf HW that already has it's development costs covered. . . Hence Google was still not willing to pay for the GN2 or IMX989. It is still too costly for them and the price bracket they have for the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.

So even in their lower volume Ultra flagships, Xiaomi offers significantly more HW per money spent, and it's no secret that the sales volume for their flagships is significantly lower than that of Samsung's and Apple's flagships, maybe even Pixel 8 Pro when compared to 13 Ultra. So the cost of the development, manufacturing, distribution, software and support is spread on much fewer devices, compared to the others.

Back to camera sensors and modules. There wouldn't be much point in putting in a top tier expensive camera system in a budget device with a chipset that cannot handle more than a fraction of the of the sensor's capabilities, and slow and limited storage and lastly with a display that disappoints as well. It's about a complete package. Do I wish we had more "camera phones" that focused less on SD 8-series gen blah, sure. But I still wan't the phone to have a great display and a snappy experiance so the chipset, RAM and storage speed and amount etc. must all be great - as well as long-term SW support. This still adds up and easily ends up in entry level flagship or "flagship killer" territory.

It it still possible though, to get a good camera system on a phone for it's price. And some of the entry level flagships does just this. You may not get as many camera modules, periscope zoom typically being left out, but you get the main one that is used 90-100 percent of the time by most users.

Xiaomi used to have extremely low margin because back then their phones are selling extremely cheap, with flagship at barely $400. Profit margin are way higher than you thought with them selling flagship at over $1k, with the Ultra at over 1.4k in most places. The $20 differences in better sensors would benefit them way more in performance. Only reason they do not put in the best sensor in the smallish non-pro is due to size and differentiation. Not only xiaomi, you do not see flagship level sensor in pretty much all smaller phones.

Anonymous, 19 Oct 2023I never mention anything about you being wrong on the bulki... morePrice is indeed the issue and the main reason why many opt for cheaper sensors like the IMX766 instead of the IMX707 - to increase their profit margins. Percentage wise the price jump from IMX766 to IMX707 is anything other than small and to IMX989 is massive. Not just the cost for the sensor, but the whole module increases by a lot.

The margins for android smartphones are generally speaking very low and Xiaomi's are typically the lowest because they offer the most total HW per $.

Marco M, 18 Oct 2023So you want progress in one field, but not the other? Got i... moreIts not about progressing or not, its about whether most people require it or not which is why I clearly state unless one is doing large files transfer on daily basis, why pay extra for Wifi 7 router now, especially for those whom are already on Wifi 5/6 which has enough speed for normal usage. This is like asking a elderly to buy the latest flagship with fastest processor.

To get USB 3 or 3.1 speeds, you also need new hardware if you don't already have it. This applies for anything when a standard gets improved to next gen.

No, you don't need to upgrade any more than your wifi router, in addition to the new phone supporting wifi 7, to benefit from wifi 7 if your PC is connected by ethernet to the router and the whole point here was file transfer between smartphone and PC for someone who does this regularly and with large amount of files and/or file sizes crying in the comment section about USB speeds.

Much better with wireless and it can be done in the comfort of your sofa, not having to go to your home office/bedrooom/gaming den etc. to connect by cable and wait with your phone physically connected like it's 1999.

It all adds up, and it also costs internal space and again, you cant just put a 120mm equivalent lens on a type 1 sensor and put it in a phone. The phone would be massively thick to accommodate the optics for it.

Having a LAN only NAS is okay for your home, but does not offer off-site backup. So if one does not wish to pay a subscription fee to microsoft, google, or others. A NAS at someone else's house is a solution. For it to be efficient and up to date, having it in LAN mode is pointless, as it must also have internet access. Making this solution less secure than OneDrive etc.

Consumer can get replacement for the 13 Pro main sensor at under 25USD, while the full 13 Ultra unit can be gotten at under 70USD if you know where to look. It is significant to the cost of manufacturing, but really nothing compared to what the consumer are paying for the devices.
But manufacturer will be dumb to put these "premium" sensors to canonicalize on their Pro/Ultra model, as well as the space required to cramp those sensor into smaller devices.

Anonymous, 17 Oct 2023Does wifi7 router available everywhere? Highly doubt. ... moreWiFi 7 routers are available worldwide where flagship smartphones are sold.

WiFi transfers over WLAN are not at all dependent on the internet speed provided by the ISP.

It has nothing to do with download and upload speeds over the internet, but solely between devices connected to through the router. So in example a WiFi 7 phone sending data to a PC that is also either connected by wifi or even ethernet to the same router.

As a side note, the average internet speed in USA in 2022 was approx. 250 mbit/s. And it has nothing to do with the benefit of WiFi 7, where the benefit is in-house for most users.
