Weekly poll: the OnePlus Open is here, who is buying one?

22 October 2023
While there are plenty of foldables in China, most brands lack the global reach of OnePlus, which has left the North American and European markets pretty bare.

Sparksys, 22 Oct 2023Common NPC comment You want a flagship phone with the highe... moreIt is CHINESE foldable, never forget the word "chinese".👍

Samsung foldable is worth USD 1800, but not with Oneplus Open.

Oneplus open has many minus points, like:
- no proper water resistant
- not so popular brand
- cheap and ugly UI
- lack of worldwide official store
- being a rebranded cheap brand Oppo Find N
- first generation Oneplus foldable (zero experience of expertise)

So, the acceptable price for this mediocre Oneplus Open is USD 500.

99% of people only willing to spend more than USD500 if it's from Samsung or Apple, including me.

Valentin, 22 Oct 2023Reading some of the comments here gave me a headache. Some ... moreI have now my 3rd Z Fold. I never had dead pixels because of normal usage.
The only time I had dead pixels was after my Z Fold3 felt down and hit the corner of a table. Any slab phone's glass screen would have cracked. But the flexible screen of the Fold survived with dead pixels (can't remember if there were more than one). Samsung replaced it without even asking how it happened. To answer your question: no dead pixels at least as far as Z Fold series is concerned.
Regarding screen protecter: that of my Z Fold 3 peeled off. And I know why: the Golden rule for screen protectors is not to hang the phone in the shower directly in the steam. The steam just destroys any screen protecter and that happened to my Fold3. Since Fold4 I just put it on the sink while taking the shower. I can still hear the music.
The screen protector of Fold4 never showed any issues during the year I had it. Before that, I never had a screen protector on my slab phones that lasted one year. The Fold5 has no issues so far. But Samsung just replaces it for 20 bucks which is absolutely ok. What I mean is that there is no issue if the protector peels off. Just put a new one on it. You should never use the foldable for a longer period with a screen protector peeling off around the crease.

Bob, 22 Oct 2023i loved valentin's comment about those of us who like ... moreTo be close minded is to refuse to accept new things/ideas/change. By your logic we would maybe still be using microUSB instead of type C or have sliding phones with buttons because some people like them and we shouldn't change them... I regret the death of the headphone jack but I don't care as much now because I moved on, I use all bluetooth devices and so does every single person I know, because phones like the iPhone are doing great even without the precious headphone jack. So yeah, losing the jack is regrettable (fk you Apple) but you can move on as you have alternatives. Be "open minded".

To answer, never mind OnePlus I'm not looking at ANY foldables for at least a couple of years more down the road until the price point makes absolute sense to me, to justify paying for something that'd really REALLY be able to give me that "fully converged" experience that I'll drop my tablet/iPad even the laptop MORE than 50% of the time. Not yet? So no...

            You need another poll option:

"I have no intention of buying the OnePlus. I just want to take shots at Samsung"

Bob, 22 Oct 2023i loved valentin's comment about those of us who like ... moreI fail to realize how not caring about the headphone jack is close minded? I also used and still use headphone jacks, my current phone doesn't have one, but I have an adapter. Close minded means you do not accept new things, try to understand stuff. The fact that people should get over the fact that a change happened since Apple fked up the jack and then all the others followed like sheep is just the way it is. Learn to accept and get over it

Apart from the price the biggest concern for me is just what support OP will give to this device, as with their other devices they seem to lose interest after a year and then by the 3rd & 4th year you are left wondering when your next update will arrive.

Although an amazing comeback by OP as they seemed to be a die brand of late.

I'm still not sold on the foldable thing. Too many compromises.

Battery life, durability, camera quality are all second-rate, all for a higher price? The OPen might be the best foldable so far but it still costs too much compared to an equivalent non-folding phone.

For example, last month I bought my mom a Xiaomi Redmi note 12 pro which came bundled with wireless earbuds for 290€!!! And it runs great! It is everything she will ever need in a phone. But a phone with features like that 5 years ago would have been 1000€. That's the point, new stuff will always be more expensive because the machinery, the patents and research that goes into them has to be compensated somehow. No one is forcing us to.buy them and they are not marketed as better phones than the regular ones, it's pure innovation trying to push things forward.

These prices don't make any sense. Some guy wrote that he rather buy a used car - and I agree. There are poor countries where 2000 dollars is a fortune, a life changing amount of money. I'm not a socialist and I know that there are obscenely rich people on the world, but when you think about it, that also doesn't make a lot of sense.
IMO, a normal mobile phone for the masses should't be more expensive than 300 dollars, and a premium one, no more than 800. But that's me.

It would be more relevant to the discussion of foldables in general as I heard a lot of people say they find the flip phones a good idea but the big fold ones not.

If they put it at 1299, I might have bought it to give myself for Christmas.

There's "infinite" reasons why people don't want a foldable. Obviously isn't possible to put all of them in the poll, that's why a simple "i'm not into foldables" would categorize those people.
