iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus to jump straight to A18 chip, rumor says

19 October 2023
They would skip the A17, and for the first time in a few years all four iPhones would have a similarly named chip.

I think Apple will introduce a SE4 phone with a17 (not a17 pro). a18 for ip16(+) and a18 pro for ip16pro(max).

        because A17 was a FLOP

Hey Vlad, just want to point out a fallacy in the article:

" differentiating features between the 'vanilla' (read: cheaper) iPhones and the more expensive Pros. "

The A16-Bionic chipset is just as expensive as the A17-Pro, if not more. The TRUE reason that Apple does this, is not for cost-cutting but to make an artificial difference between their devices. The A16 is built on TSMC's best 5nm node ("4nm") and Apple pays a premium for it, because their A15 was "too good". The A17 was supposed to be based on the TSMC 3nm node, which came with +30% uplift in performance/efficiency. But seemingly due to problems at TSMC it's looking like a +1% upgrade. Apple and TSMC have longstanding contracts, so I would assume for the next 12-months that Apple is getting a HUGE discount from TSMC.

Now, for next year there is ZERO reason for Apple to use the A17 or the "faulty" 3nm node. They will use the normal/proper 3nm node that was promised, because it will be cheaper for them. Now I suspect, that one of two things might happen:
          - Apple says stuff it, continues making A17-Pro chipsets for the cheaper iPhones, and has the new A18-Pro chipset offer a proper generational (20% or more) uplift.
          - Apple makes a new gameplan, where they design two chipsets each year. An A18 chipset and an A18-Pro chipset, and using the same node/lithography. The difference would be one of silicon quality. So the good wafers will have higher clockspeeds, more cores, larger GPU, or a combination of those.
(They've done this already if you look at the slowest M1-Pro chipset and compare it to the fastest M1-Pro chipset... or compare the M1 family of chips from the slowest M1 MacBook Air, to the nimble M1-Pro MacBook 14, to the fastest M1 Max in the MacBook 16. So Apple can do this again, but on a larger scale for the smaller chips starting with next year.)

....by the way, Apple is pretty good at recycling old designs and parts into making new products. Traditionally they don't make midrange devices, they just sell their previous flagship next year at a discount, and that tactic was one of the key reasons for their success.

                                  F17, 20 Oct 2023my guess… A17 Pro = A18 . 🤷🏻‍♂️Nope, A18 and A18 pro will be manufactured with the same "N3E" second-generation 3nm process instead of "N3B" that's used for the A17 Pro. I think there will be just some GPU core differences.

I'm not an apple user so this might not be accurate but...

I read that the A16 in the vanilla Iphone 15 is not the same found in the Iphone 14 Pro. It's a different process node, so why is it still called A16? Isn't it then "A17 lite"?

If the new chip wont be worse than the last one it could be interesting.
                                      Othervise not so much.
