I wonder if this would mean the A18 will, instead of being a copy of the A17 Pro, be a downclocked/fewer cores version of the A18 Pro?
That would fit the nomenclature of the Pro and regular M1/M2 chips, so there's precedent. It would basically mean the iPhone 16 non-Pro having the Apple equivalent of a current-gen Snapdragon 7 instead of last year's 8. If that was how it played out, I could see the vanilla 16 being a battery life champion by having a less demanding chip on the same latest node...

It's not simply a camera that checks whether you remotely look like you on most other devices. It's arguably the best face unlock right now.
That being said, I still agree with you. Surely, they could've found a workaround by now. I've actually thought of possibilities. The Z Fold has been using under-screen camera technology. The image quality is abysmal though. But, what if they can just have a single punchhole camera like everyone else and bury the other stuff (like the IR sensor) under the screen instead? I'm no engineer so I don't know if it's feasible. Another idea is having bezels not as thin as they are now but so they can spread the other equipment around them and, again, have a single punchhole camera in the middle.
It wouldn't be unlike Apple to just reserve this level of FaceID for the Pro models and go with regular face-unlocking technology for the non-Pro models. But, that would mean the non-Pro models will get the single punchhole camera treatment and they know people mgiht prefer that over the Pros for the cleaner look alone.

If they really have to skimp out on something, I'd rather they continue their trend and give the 16 and 16 Plus lesser processors, but up the screen refresh rate to even just 90Hz so they can still say the Pros are "more Pro".
