Weekly poll: how old is your phone?

29 October 2023
Are you the type to upgrade every year or do you hold on to phones for as long as possible?

People really just switch phones way before the update support ends. Whenever one single part spoils, they just buy a new phone instead of sending it for repairs.

Not the case for FairPhone though. 6 years later, unless they are poor, they'd switch a phone already.

      Redmi Note 7 , 4+ years maybe?

Thankfully I can afford to upgrade my phone whenever I'd like. I'll keep my phone for max 2-3 years

Were you supposed to type 'people here PRAISE how lack of features is "the future"? Bec if so, then I agree with you. Consoomerism has consumed this site's audience.

Anonymous, 29 Oct 2023So, my last phone was xperia xz1 bought in 2019 (for $100),... moreDid you buy your phone, used or 100% new? And will you buy your future S23+, used or new?

I think that this is counted from the first day you bought in new/never used condition, no matter how old the phone is.

I mean, I recently bought a brand new Mi 11, but the phone itself is from 2020. Funnily enough my daily driver is still the OP7 Pro, but once I transition* over to Mi 11, I can see myself using it for a solid 3 years.

*Might not be a seamless transition tho. I often like switching between lots of phones.

So, my last phone was xperia xz1 bought in 2019 (for $100), and my current phone is galaxy note 10+ bought last year (for $170), and my next phone is galaxy s23+ and i will bought it in next 2 years

Im confused how i will answer this

One thing I really want to say is that, as soon as the phone doesn't get OS updates anymore, you should at least consider upgrading your phone. If you think you should, you should probably stick to your ecosystem your in (iOS and Android wise).

Honestly, at this point you are better off picking up an old flagship like the Note 9.

Every year, flagships get worse. Only iPhone has been more or less the same (which means little to nothing changes between each year).

We get less features, price still goes up, and people here moan how lack of features is "the future"

I keep a phone for as long as it can. Roughly 3-5 years if I like it and less if I don't. As long as there's software supporting it and hardware is powerful enough I could probably keep it for at least a decade.

A 2xl pixel in the panda color, I also bought it when it came out in 2017... I have this as a second support phone!! 3 months ago I sold my pixel 7 pro because it got too hot!! waiting for the oneplus 12, vivo x100 pro plus or I'll buy something used to spend the holidays and wait for the s24 ultra and the xiaomi 14 ultra... We'll see

My current phone is 5+ years old. The galaxy note8

I change when it's no longer working but being on OnePlus, I want to change it asap 💀 Certainly waiting for how SD8G3 performs and Xiaomi 14/S24 might be my next one.

I have a 64GB iPhone XR and it fares still well. Genshin frame drops are rare unless I'm on "highest". A12 is still a good chipset in 2023 but by 2025, you should look into an iPhone 15.

As for Android based fans, the A54 is a pretty good phone. E1380 is a fine chipset despite people not liking a SD chip instead. But I'd upgrade to a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. It's at 550 dollars on Best Buy (certified refurbished).
