The world is larger than you think.

N5800 XMusic will be cheaper than that with carrier subsidy. Most carriers in Eurozone will hand it out for free with a contract.

Anonymous, 25 Sep 2008I completely agree with DanT , Iphone is already a huge f... moreThe popularity of the almighty brand obviously is different at different markets.
In places like Japan and Korea, one would be very lucky to find a user of the almighty brand. While in some places, where likely different brands may subsidize with the network service providers to offer near $0 handset price, is quite popular.
When somebody says 1/3 of the people are using iphone, I believe the implication was "within the same market segment". Or better yet, why these people are using iphone instead of the almighty brand? Why these people spent the $ on iphones instead of any product by the almighty brand?
Sort of like looking at sales of Toyota vs. Mercedes Benz worldwide. One can easily find a Toyota but not a Mercedes Benz. However, most places around the world, Mercedes Benz only sells mid-upscale cars. So comparing sales of a Corolla with MB, even C-class, is not comparing apples with apples.
Not sure if I use a good analogy. But I don't think the quality of almighty brand's products are as good as Toyota...

One of the cheapest touchscreen handset by a major brand is selling for US$200. When can the almighty brand offer one for US$200?

This is brilliant tactic by Nokia. They will steal the touchscreen market outside US/N.America by giving a 90% solution. In fact, this phone carries lots of features that are important to emerging markets at a better price point.
Advantages compared to the other phone:
1. Cheaper
2. Comes with Music
3. Nokia Maps built in so no need of data subscription
4. Decent camera
5. Expandable memory
6. Open to 3rd party apps, unrestricted bluetooth, WiFi, VOIP, tethering
7. Unlocked/freedom to use multiple carriers

AGC, 25 Sep 2008I totally agree,
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area (w... moreApple certainly got its objective....make the sales! That's all it (or any other company) really cares!
So what did the almighty company do when Apple made so many iphones and made so many people spent $x million on these devices?
Why can't the almighty brand do the same? Why the almighty brand did not become the "leader" in terms of touchscreen technology? Rather it "waited" for other companies "success" in the market and then all of the sudden decided to jump in?
Different people have different preferences around the world. The Japanese can't survive without flip phones. The Europeans can't survive bar phones. While most Americans probably don't like bar phones either. (from my observation in selected cities in US in June, the almighty brand's sales is behind Samsung, Moto, and some others!)
Americans may not have the impression of being smart for some others, though afterall, they're the one who made mobile phones "affordable", they made the space shuttle, they...(nope, don't want to mention about cars...)
I just can't understand why so many people admire the almighty brand so much when it ignores customers demand (by making very few flip phones, and only ONE touchscreen phone before 5800) until somebody starts to capture the market share...

So, no body is eligible to say every 1 out of 3 has Iphone.
In my geography , 75% of people owns NOKIA , 10% samsung , 10% SE , 5% remaining. But, not Iphone.

Why does everybody assumes that this device is no match to SE, HTC, Samsung, Apple, etc. You haven't even laid your hands on one of these? People who use Winmo believe Symbian OS sucks, while Symbian users think Winmo is a bad OS. News: They try to improve their OS' by the day.
Well i assume that most people who comment here are still in pre-school. Stop bashing other phones that you don't like. These company won't give you credits for doing so. I like Omnia, HTC Diamond, iPhone, Walkman phones, and N & E Series and Xpress Music phones.
In the end, the consumers are the winners. So just choose wisely kids. Be objective.

Tim, 25 Sep 2008Well I don't agree with GSM Arena on this being a mid-range... moreTHIS is a midrange phone because the ONLY thing NEW about this is the TOUCH-BASED SCREEN and the OS! rest of the features are NOTHING revolutionary at all. NOKIA will announce the HIGH-END counterpart of 5800 XpressMusic, a.k.a NOKIA N98 late this year or early next year.

DanT, 25 Sep 2008I dont believe that 90% of the phones will be touchscreen. ... moreI totally agree,
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area (where literally 1 in 3 have an iPhone) and I constantly hear complaints from people that the lack of a 'tactile' interface is what they hate most about their iphones. I respond to them, "Isn't that why you bought one, for the 'touch' capabilities?" And they say, "No I got one because it looks great, plays all my music, and has a good camera."
That's proof positive that many people, if not most, are highly swayed by cutesy marketing gimmicks and make more decisions based on aesthetic qualities than substantive functional qualities.
Or maybe that's just here in the United States. Maybe that's also why we're in so much financial trouble...Hmmm

Well I don't agree with GSM Arena on this being a mid-range phone. This is Nokia's way of saying, hey touchscreens are no big deal, we can do one on a mid-range phone, no sweat. Something like what they did with GPS. It is time touchscreens came off their high pedestal and stopped being cash cows for companies offering them.
I think Nokia offering it on a midrange set will change the game, because it is Symbian after all.
